Why do we build such fancy prisons?
Something that bothers me a lot is how much money we spend each year keeping up prisoners. It is bad enough how high the crime rate is and all the violence that it produces, but it is also a serious drain on government budgets. So, why is there not more demand that prisons be made cheaper and perhaps even profitable? Why should we build fortresses to keep in drug offenders? Why should we build fortresses at all? It seems like we could put them in simpler housing, especially the low risk inmates and find them something better to do than stamp license plates and pick up trash. Of course the really dangerous prisoners, keep them locked up in the fortresses, but most inmates simply aren't that kind.
What do you think? Is prison reform a good way to cut budgets?
Fancy is a relative term. What I mean is that prisons are not built or run in such a way as to maximize benefit to the taxpayer. Prisons should be cheap and effective. That means rehabilitating the prisoner (this includes not ruining him or her with inhumane conditions) while keeping costs as low as possible.

They should get army surplus tents and a field surrounded by razor wire, with a few good snipers on duty at all times and have to grow their food or starve

Prisons have become privatized which means there are people profiting from them. Personally i think it comes down to our justice system that needs fixing and let the punishment fit the crime. I beleive that victims have fewer rights than offenders and I also think too many are in prison for poverty related crimes. These are issues that should be addressed in society. I think violence offenders and serious abusers should be put away for life while i think the mental health system needs fixing also.

couldn't we save millions by just executing all the serious offenders? A bullet in the back of the head would only cost a couple of dollars
All the minor offenders could just be given huge fines and community service. We can confine them to the prison that is poverty

A prison reform is a good idea. All those inmates need is food, water, and a soap dispenser so they don't worry about dropping the soap

Most prisons are totally or partially privatized. Large does not mean luxurious or as you put it fancy. We have them because our society and form of government is the greatest in the world, but it does lend itself to the less scrupulous who seek to exploit it, the result is you broke the law, you go to jail. Not much deterrent to threaten jail or prison if you don't have any of them.

The way they pamper prisoners is enough to make you sick, I only wish we could toss a few of these soft liberals in prison, so they can see what animals look like up close.

they're shrunk by using your states branch of corrections. they're regulated by way of state, federal, and expert accreditation businesses such because of the fact the yankee Correctional association and your state.
