Do you believe in absolute truth?

That there is such a thing as black and white or right and wrong. Or, do you believe that truth, right and wrong are fluid and change as the circumstances dictate?

Does it matter if there is an absolute truth? We will never know it. All we can do is go for the best truth. If you look at human history, we constantly get it wrong and we are getting it wrong right now. Several generations from now they will be shocked that we didn't think something was wrong as it will be obvious to them even as we think slavery is horrible and yet not 200 years ago only fringe groups were speaking out.

Some things a true, independent of what we humans perceive. The Earth goes 'round the Sun. That happened way, way back when a pretty good sized number of the world's population thought everything revolved around the Earth. So, yes, I believe there are absolute truths. The universe has certain laws of its own that it follows and that's all there is to it. Science tries to discover those laws, and when science gets it wrong, they change theory to fit.

I get the feeling that we're talking about human Truth (capital T, not little t). I don't believe in immutable Truth that comes spouting out of a person's mouth (or writings). People can all witness the same guy rob a bank and every single one will describe him differently. How can we trust people to get a story right about some immutable Truth? It's wrong to steal, but what if you're in a tyrannical nation where the king owns almost everything and stealing bread is the only way your family will keep from starving to death because there is no place to work (Les Misrebles, anyone?). Circumstances change immutable Truth because these immutable Truths are just beliefs.

Closer to the second point of view, but i define truth differently. Everything you know is true. The reason it's true is because you know it to be true at that time. Everything i Know is true, until i find out it isn't and then I adjust the truth as i know to be true to fit the new knowledge. Even if something is true, it doesn't make it right or wrong. Could it be possible that everything you know is right/wrong yes. Could it be possible that everything i know is right/wrong? yes. Could i be acting in the wrong when i'm believe i am acting in the right? yes. visa versa. The point is though you act to the best of your ability. You act according to the truth as you know it.

Is there something as a universal truth? Yes. Should there be peace on Earth? yes. The problem with universal truths is that no one agrees about how to obtain the desired affect. Some think to obtain peace, you most have the respect of fear of everyone else. Others believe only peace comes from peace. Still others suggest that we kill everyone who doesn't believe along our lines in order to exterminate all those who would create conflict.

    Truth is always truth.

Only rarely is truth determined by circumstances.

For example, someone asked today which season September is in.

The correct answer depends on if the person lives in the North or South hemisphere.

Once the location is determined the answer is fixed.

    Yes there is absolute truth.

    Jesus said, "I am truth".

There are truths that are not absolute...and there are absolute truths.

So, "it's sunny outside" is true, but that only means accurate at the moment...later it will be dark, and sometimes there are clouds.

But "murder is wrong" is a universal truth...and absolute.

The "grey" arguments usually come about when people are looking to weaken a universal and make it merely a preference, or one way of looking at something.

I believe that the truth is just that and there is an absolute truth. People all have their own ideas about what the truth is and it can vary from one person to the next. But that doesn't change the fact that there is but one truth. We may not know what it is and may never know until Jesus returns and we are all Knowing like Him.

No, right and wrong, left and right, black and white, grass and sky, are all just ideas created by man to name the things around us. If we didn't have a name for it, how would we be able to communicate, b/c pointing wouldn't get very far. Absolute can't exist because knowledge itself doesn't truly exist. Everything is based on theory, and the fact that you can prove something is there, does not mean it is what we say it is. We don't know what exists beyond this world, and you can fight this idea all you want you close-minded Christians, but faith isn't absolute, meaning God isn't absolute. And all this is BECAUSE, no one knows anything for certain.

No. To believe "in" absolute truth precludes the existence of infinite truth, which is impossible. When belief is displaced by understanding, then it can be said that one understands absolute truth to be the only fact.

  • No, I don't believe there are any absolutes.

Actually, I don't think 'right' and 'wrong' or 'black' and 'white' exist at all. Everything is simply a matter of perspective, your personal morals and what you had drilled into your head since a young age.
