Getting psyched up for a trip, a poem, critiques?
She stiffens in our airport hug,
her smile is forced, teeth gritted.
Politeness abounds, all the
right things said,
"How was your flight?
So glad you could come!"
A week lies before me
of rolled eyes and a
face of disgust,
quickly turned in the hope
I don't see.
So, why do I go?
Put up with rejection?
Because of her four
innocent kids,
whose eyes light up
when they scream,
"Look,
GRANDMA'S HERE!"
I cannot close the door
to them.

You can't make her love you.
She has to realize she needs you as much as those kids do, as she is missing out on a beautiful thing.
Kids are wonderful judges of character

If she stiffens in the airport,
push her up against a big burly
tourist headin' for Atlanta,
yell "BOMBS and rapists errr and STUFF"
wait for the mass chaos
and general all-around hysteria
then snatch the kids and
all the Cheetos
and fly to Six Flags.
That's what I would do.

Points to the generations that can look past adult issues knowing it is all about the kids.

Um, if she's not interested I could use a mom.
Seriously, I know what you're saying and I'm so sorry. I think one of my biggest issues has always been if my family doesn't love me who else will?
Hugs you tightly.x.

The answer is simple to endear the grownup: bring cake.
My family is Italian, and when we visit we always bring cake.
The miniature pastries are my favorite -- little cannoli and
sfogliatelle. Mmmmmmmmmm.........

That sounds like how it was the few time I was invited to my sons house when his wife was home, but like you, I went for the grandkids. Now that my son has his own place, I see the kids every weekend, and we have a blast!
I'll be thinkin' bout you ma, have fun, and don't let anyone ruin your "grandkids time".
**hugs**
