Does ex president Carter understand what he is saying about assault rifles?

Mr. Carter has recently published his opinion on "assault rifles" in a article published in the NY Times.

In the article, he talks about how bad assault rifles are because they can be used to shoot through police body armor. It seems to me that he is being somewhat hypocritical, as he admits to owning two sniper rifles and two handguns. The sniper rifles (scoped high power hunting rifles) can punch through body armor at more than twice the range of the 7.62x39 cartridge. The handgun is according to Brady the choice of criminals worldwide.

I'm sure that if asked Mr Carter would be more than willing to give up his weapons of criminal choice, those being his hunting rifles, shotguns and handguns.

Here's his article, read his position for yourself.

So, do you think that he is perhaps just mirroring the party line?

Update:

Please understand, I am using the term "assault rifle" here as defined by the "Liberals". I personally only consider title 3 rifles to be assault rifles. I define any semi auto, no matter what features have been tacked on, to be the same as a hunting rifle. I even consider a semi auto 1919a4 converted to the A6 configuration to be a hunting rifle.

President Carter understands what he's talking about. The words are carefully chosen to spark recognition and emotional responses. Only gun people go around complaining about the technical definition of "assault rifles" and "assault weapons". For non-gun owners such discussions sound like a foreign language.

The gun lobby needs to stress that semi-auto rifles are protected by the 2d Am to arm the militia, i.e. all Americans. We should also stress that semi-auto rifles can serve as self defense weapons and can be used for hunting, especially in the brush where a compact gun is handy for close shots.

But what hurts gun owners the most is when fellow gun owners forget about the larger picture. When hunters bad mouth semi-auto rifles, they are only greasing the slippery slope that will eventually lead to the demise of their scoped bolt guns. And when shotgun lovers criticize the use of semi-auto rilfes for self defense, they also contribute to their own demise and they should realize that Thunder Ranch has good reasons to offer an Urban Rifle course to students.

In my experience, you can't turn a non-gun owner. Nothing you say can change their minds, unless maybe if they become a victim of a violent crime. We are much better served educating our own fellow gun owners that know the value of the 2d Am and firearms, but sometimes fall in the "us vs. them" trap and start criticizing fellow gun owners. All gun owners need to stay united.

No and he suggested that because of the fact there's a factor of certainty in it. look I disagree with homosexuality ... for this reason i'm Homophobic. yet i'm no longer, I basically don't think it somewhat is solid by no means the less; my warfare of words is branded as hatred and self righteous and homophobic. the individuals who disagree with Obama are suggested as racist by skill of people who help Obama as a defence or an attack on the guy or female who might disagree with a 0.5 black 0.5 white president. What Mr. Carter replaced into putting forward replaced into that the traditional or above familiar citizen can not talk against the present president's rules devoid of being branded a "racist". And Mr. Carter is solid. The call calling may be incorrect yet what the previous president has suggested is solid on the money.

Mr. Carter, in spite of saying and doing really dumb things on a fairly regular basis, is a smart man. I'm sure he knows the difference between an intermediate-strength cartridge and a full-strength rifle cartridge. Likewise, he knows the difference between a semi-automatic and a fully automatic weapon. His position relies on the likelihood that many of his supporters will not have that knowledge. It's political obfuscation at its finest.

I'm somewhat less certain that Mr. Obama knows the difference between semi- and fully-automatic weapons, and I give him the benefit of the doubt, thinking his position is one of willful ignorance. That, at least, is only a venal sin.

Carter is on the same plane he was back years ago. He's a cradle to grave liberal and would sell out your gun rights for the right social program or international pablum in politcal trade.

He should stick to his part time gig as a home builder...suits him.

The average citizen can't get a real assault rifle, and those that can must pay several thousand dollars for the weapon, a federal tax and must be approved by the local sheriff.

I try not to pay attention to the rambling of fools.

Source(s): I remember the Carter Presidency all too well. He also was a factor in certifying the first election of Hugo Chavez but later admitited there apparently was massive vote fraud.

Well that's funny, I read the article and he didn't say any of the stuff you made up in your post.

You make him out to be a fool saying only semi-autos fire cop killer bullets --- he didn't say.

You say he said he owns "two sniper rifles" --- he didn't say that.

Once again, we just see lies by the right
