If someone's question had two parts, would you rather them answer one, or neither?

Because I often answer one part of a question if I only know one half, but I got told off before and told that if I didn't know the entire answer they'd prefer I didn't answer at all.

A good response to half the question is better than a crappy response to both. What's up with people? You are answering out of the kindness of your heart after all.

Well, that's dumb. I'd rather have someone give me as much information as possible, even if it doesn't answer the entire question.

Most people, I think, do prefer that as much of their question is answered as possible, rather than having people hold back on answering because they don't know the answer to the entire question. When I ask a question, I hate when people don't answer. (I got 17 stars on a question and only 9 people answered. That's annoying.) But I'm getting off topic.

Anyway, just don't worry about it, Kate. Answer a question to the best of your abilities. It isn't your fault if the asker is somewhat of an Answers snob.

If it were my question, I'd appreciate a person answering any part of it that they could to the best of their ability. It's much more useful than a person who just answers with an "I don't know" or "that sounds familiar."

To be honest, the person who said that sounds like s/he was either frustrated or stupid and rude. I would wonder at it for a moment or two, then let it go and hope to not come across another of that person's questions again. And, continue to answer questions as best as I could, even if it was only half that I knew :)
