freezer will freeze meat and water but not ice cream...?
Ice Cubes, Chicken, Meat all freeze fine. Waffles (in a Box), Ice Cream and fruit cups will not freeze. I turned the freezer to its coldest setting to no prevail.
Any ideas?
The refrigerator came with my house (purchased in January). The former home owner did neglect (seemingly) everything. The inside is gleaming and the back is clean.
I could leave ice cream in for weeks without it getting frozen. The fridge is not packed at all and I am concerned that the unit is on its way out.

If you have not cleaned your refrigerator inside and out in a few years now is a good time. The condenser coil needs to be cleaned. it will not get cold enough if the condenser is blocked. Blocked air flow cause a high head pressure and temperatures. This relates directly to the evaporator coil in the freezer. High condensing temperatures means high suction and evaporator temperatures.
Clean it all inside and out and remove all air flow blockages inside and out.
Make sure all fans are operating. Make sure your evaporator coil is not a block of ice and is defrosting properly.
Ice cream needs to be kept at zero or below. Ice cream contains sugars and sodium that lower the freezing temperatures. Water will freeze at 32°. Meats have a slightly lower than water freezing temp because of salts in the meat.
Your freezer is not working properly and that's usually due to poor homeowner maintenance. Read your manual. It will tell you what your responsibilities are in order to get the most out of your appliance.

Hiya Pinoy. What the problem is, that if you were to increase the refrigerators freezer to maintain a lower temperature to about 10ºF [-12ºC] to keep the ice cream frozen solid, the rest of the items store in the lower part of the fridge would more then likely be frozen. Basic home refrigerators are on a mono compressor cooling system, that have coiling surrounding the freezer part and a small area in the lower part. When the fridge goes in cooling mode, the compressor turns on, pumps coolant threw a small valve which allows it to explain and become cold the is pumped into the freezer's cooling coils where the cold gas is transferred through the coil into the freezer area, the the gas is pumped down to the lower section in a less cold condition since losing much of it's coolness in keeping the freezer cold; then it is pumped back to the compressor to begin the journey again. The dial in the fridge that has the numbers on it, is the thermostat to regulate how cold the unit gets. You could turn it to a higher number making the temperature drop to keep the ice cream frozen, but you may also freeze the things in the lower part. I work in the retail food industry, and in our food stores, the coolers that hold frozen product are usually set at 10ºF [-12ºC] to keep those products frozen. There are home refrigerators/freezer that have a dual system, but those are usually high in the cost factor. Again, the basic every day refrigerator/freezer units are single loop of coolant coil. I too have the very same problem, but just enjoy that first bowel of frozen wonder, then when I eat the rest of the ice cream, I just think of that first bowl. LOL, I hope this has helped, good luck.

Blue Bell ice cream remains hard in the freeze but most other brands remain soft so it is not the freezer temperature. I suspect it is the ingredients in the ice cream. Does anyone have a technical answer?? Mike

Are you leaving them on the door?? If you are this can make it hard to freeze because you are always opening and closing the door and the items on the door get all of the heat of the air outside.
Try moving it towards the back of the freezer and see if that helps.

Water freezes at 32 degrees farenheit, your freezer should keep food at 20 degrees below zero or more. You need to set the thermostat temperature down farther

Your freezer should be at or around 0 degrees and the refrigerator should be 36 to 38 degrees. Check out this site.

buy a freezer thermometer and see...a frdge freezer should read 0 degrees f. ... a deep freezer should read -20 f.
