Why have I started getting really bad hangovers?

A year or so ago I could stay up all night getting wrecked, grab a couple of hours kip, and wake up feeling a bit groggy but basically a few glasses of water and a shower and I was good for work. And all this 3 or 4 times a week every week. When people said they couldn't go out as they were working the next day I honestly had no idea what they meant...

Then I turned 30... Now whenever I drink (even not that much) It's all I can do to crawl out of bed the next day. I basically feel like death warmed up and the day after that is pretty ropey too. It's getting to the point where the pleasure of drinking is seriously started to get outweighed by the pain!

Whats going on? Anyone else had this happen to them (please say I'm not alone :-) Is it the onset of old age? I had a blood test for my liver function and it was fine.

LOL..welcome to getting older. It hit me in my late 20's, i used to be able to drink and drink and stay up all night and still be able to function the next day...and do it all over again! I am 32 and really have to be careful when i drink and how much i drink and what my plans are for the next day. Welcome to your 30's my friend!!!

It could be what are you drinking. If you drink a higher end booze and get away from a "pop" mix you will have less of a hang over. Cheap booze and pop contribute more to a hang over than anything. Last night I had 3 glasses of wine and about 4 gin and tonics and no hang over. I'm 37. Drinking top shelf booze neat or on the rocks or with tonic or soda will help. Don't mix with juice, too much sugar! Also, try drinking some water, I know it sucks, but sneak it in. Dehydration also contributes to a hang over.

It happens to everyone. Teenagers are more resistant to alcohol, and therefore become less intoxicated and suffer less from the after effects of it. Of course, the amount differs for everyone. I also tend to find it depends on what I drink, I can pound back gin & tonics all night long and be fine the next morning... if I drink a few drinks with rum, I have a terrible hangover.

Im only 24 and the same thing is happening to me. I used to drink nothing but budweiser and make fun of the older guys drinking light beer. Now I found that drinking lighter beers helps with the hangovers. I have a hangover for the entire next day if I drink budweiser now.

im only 19 and the same thing happened to me 2 years ago i could drink myself into oblivion and be fine the next day now i have 1 beer and i feel like death ive given up on drinking. its definitely the age factor it happened to my brother as well when he was about 22. sorry to disappoint .. buying better liquor helps but not a whole lot and obviously isn't too easy on the wallet

I know i'm still young at 24 but it's the same for me. I never got hangovers up to a year ago and now i get them badly after drinking less!

You're getting old! My parents warned me about this... though to be honest, the very first time I got drunk I could barely move the next day, so perhaps that is why I drink very seldom! But yeah, it's age I'm afraid!

yes sweetie, unfortunately that is a fact of life...haven't you heard people say "i can't drink like i used to when i was younger"?? well yah, as your body ages, it takes it longer to recover, cell regeneration as well metabolizing the alcohol out of your system.

only thing you can do? drink less alcohol, more water and take a couple of advils before bed (maybe eat a couple pieces of toast too)
