Why are Us comics usually dumbed down when they are turned into cartoons?

Why is it that most US comics are dumbed down when they are made into cartoons.

For example, the Iron and Spiderman comics could get quite hard core with character addicted to drink or drugs, and people getting killed, yet when they made them into cartoons they were dumbed down for little kids. even the Transformers comics had character being eviscerated, bleeding or loosing limbs in violent ways, even dying horribly, yet when they made it into a cartoon they took all of that out and screened it for an audience 5 years younger than the audience of the comics.

Why choose an age group so much younger than the original target audience? Like making things U and Y7 instead of PG-13? The polarity of Anime since the 1990s clearly demonstrates that there is a market for PG-13 animation, so why are comic books still dumbed down even today?

Update:

Do You Have The Funk?:

Sorry, but which planet is that on? X-Men, Superman, Batman, Spiderman, Iron Man, Hulk, in fact almost all DC/Marvel franchises started out as comics before they became cartoons. Many were comics 10-20 years or more before they became cartoons.

Batman, for example was created in 1939 but not animated until 1968. The animated version was significantly dumbed down from the comics. The modern version is also significantly dumbed down. The Joker, for example never kills anybody in the animations. Yet in the comics he once poisoned an entire boyscout troupe with toxic cotton candy.

because the companies can't help themselves when it comes to marketing to the youth market and doesn't want to alienate them (or their parents) - whether this is a valid tactic or not, is kind of immaterial. I think it stinks too!

WB's sacrificing Justice League in favor of "The Batman" is a good example of this. In this case, I'm sure toy merchandising considerations were also taken into account.

they do seem to be changing a bit when it comes to animated movies - Justice League: New Frontier, Superman: Doomsday and the Teen Titans movie that will be coming out are much more mature in theme

they figure the easiest way to get people to read comics, is to introduce them as a tv show when you are a kid. Those show are made for the children so they can grow up and buy the comics when they get older. They defiantly are not dumbing down the books. Have you read Old Man Logan yet, or any of the Walking Dead. It's just they make kids safe cartoons with their characters. The kids have their thing, we have ours.
