Removal of black coding on PVC pipe...what solvent?
The newer markings on PVC pipe don't come off with laquer thinner like the previous pipe. Is there a solvent that will take off the coding, etc. without hurting the PVC?

MEK, methel ethyl keytone, is the correct solvent for PVC pipe. I can usually find it at Lowes in the paint dept.

As a polymer chemist, one who has made PVC resins, formulated numerous PVC compounds for numerous end uses including plumbing, siding, flexible films, etc. I strongly urge you NOT to use any solvent on the PVC to remove the printing. You run the risk of permanent damage - and what is worse is that the damage may initiate when you apply the solvent but not develop for weeks.
Solvents like acetone, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), ethers, chlorinated solvents should never be used as these will leach out impact modifiers and stabilizers which will promote polymer failure.
I see others have suggested such solvents. I urge you not do do it. Further do not use the PVC joint cement to remove it either as it contains the solvents mentioned above. Joint cement is ok for joints because there is an overlap and greater thickness.
If you really do not like the printing, paint over it with a latex (water borne) paint, not ever a solvent based paint.
