What do you do when you cant sleep?

I have had insomnia for many MANY years now, what are good ways to fall asleep and stay asleep? I have tried sleeping pills but they always make me feel so groggy the next day even if i take them at a decent time and get a good amount of sleep.

Any ideas?

Update:

i drink coffee but no later than 4pm on a school night. I do not drink soda either...so caffeine is not too much of a problem i dont think...

plus when i was younger i wasnt drinking that stuff to have insomnia...

Drink warm milk. (You can add honey to taste.) It works. You'll see!

It has tryptophan which is soothing and makes you sleepy. Don't knock it till you try it! It helps millions of people fall asleep.

There is also a vitamin called Melatonin. It's sold everywhere. (Walmart is the cheapest.) It's very safe and 3Mg's before bed should do the trick. Take before bed.

If these things don't work for you, go to a sleep clinic. There are lots of other ways that work. You're suffering too much when there IS help for you. Other than a sleep clinic, I'd recommend a psychiatrist. They are SO smart, and they know of meds that other doctors would never think of.

    Good luck soon! :)

First, if you go to bed, close your eyes, try to fall asleep, and are still awake after about a half hour, then get back up. Walk around, get a snack, go to the washroom, knit for a few minutes, or do something until you are perked back up, then try going to bed again.

But here are some tips for falling asleep:

    1. Only use your bed for two things: sleep and sex. Avoid using your bed for reading, watching TV, doing homework, etc. That way, your brain will grow to develop an association between your bed and sleep. When to climb into bed, your body will automatically come to the conclusion that it's now time to sleep.

    2. Keep your bedroom slightly on the cool side. Not freezing cold, but slightly cooler than it would be during the day. And make sure it isn't hot. It's very difficult to fall asleep in a hot room.

    3. Warm milk or hot chocolate before bed can help for some people.

    4. Count sheep. I know it's corny, but it does work. And it doesn't actually have to be sheep, it can just be plain old counting. I often count to about 20 and then start over again at 1. Counting is an activity that forces us to concentrate, but doesn't require much brain power. Counting can help us stop worrying about the concerns of the day, etc. without using so much brain power that it perks us up.

    4. Try quietly singing/humming (or, better yet, singing the song in your head) a very soft, soothing song. The song must be one that you know the lyrics to incredibly well - well enough that you can sing them without having to focus too hard (again, avoiding expending too much brain power). This tactic works for the same reason that #3 works. If you're looking for a song, I find "Silent Night" works well.

    5. Play soothing music. Nature sounds are good.

    6. Some people find watching a boring TV show helps them fall asleep. Others find it keeps them awake. If you have a TV in your bedroom, give it a shot.

    7. I've been told focusing on the colour black is supposed to help.

    8. Picture yourself sleeping comfortably. Maybe picture yourself curling up in a big billowy cloud.

    9. Don't think too much. This is very important. Don't let yourself think about the concerns of the day or of yesterday or tomorrow. If we focus too much on our problems, we automatically want to try to solve them, and this will keep us awake.

    10. Drinking two raw eggs is also supposed to help. I don't know why. I've never tried it.

I hope something in there will help you!

Try some of these non-medicinal alternative:

    1. No caffeine after 12

    2. Take a mellow bath before bed

    3. Try sleepy nature music

    4. Write in a journal for 30 minutes before laying down, just to get things off your mind

    5. Make your room as dark as possible

    6. Try some progressive muscle relaxation techniques

    7. Exercise a little, at least 3 prior to going to bed

    8. Try some sleepytime tea

    things i have heard:

    1. keep a strict sleeping schedual. always wake up at the same time, no matter what.

    2. remove ALL electronics from the bedroom and don't use any within an hour of going to bed (at the same time every night)

    3. start a journal, its good stress relief, and stress is bad for insomnia

    4. see a doctor about getting in for CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) its now being proved (so i hear) that it can be a huge help for insomniacs, because we psych ourselves out about sleeping

    5. make sure you are comfortable. that means temperature, your blankets, etc. me: i like a cold room and lots of blankets, that always helps.

...good luck :P I know what a struggle it is.

edited to add: forget where I read it, but sex is supposed to be one of the best ways to help fall asleep. ...as long as you don't stress about it lol.

one great way to fall asleep is to drink a glass of warm milk about 30 minutes before bed. also dont watch tv, do homework read scary stories or do anything stressful in bed . Your mind needs to associate your bed with sleep and relaxation. try downloading relaxation or deep sleep meditation audio online. Good luck!

hmm well i would look for a good sleeping pill that doesnt make you groggy the next day cuz thats the most simple solution. try listening to calm music or watch tv in the dark. also this may sound not true, its very helpful to just lay in bed and close your eyes cuz even though your awake you can feel rested if you do it for long enough the main thing is to chill out somehow and mellow out
