Doc couldn't get heartbeat?!?!?

Im 10-12 weeks pregnant, cant b sure till i get my scan. doc checked today for heartbeat, she said she couldn't b sure if the heartbeat we were hearing was mine or baby's. :( she also tested my urine + protein showed up, i have to send in a fresh sample of urine in a couple of days to be re-tested. she never actually told me the dangers/effects of protein in my urine. could this be linked to the heartbeat confusion or is she just stupid. very aggravated as i thought id hear heartbeat or SOMETHING. but she has not told me anything. pregnant w/ baby#1

It is very common to not be able to hear the heartbeat at 10-12 weeks. For one the baby is small, and two, sometimes he/she is in an awkward position (hiding behind one of your major blood vessels).

Protein in your urine is common in pregnancy, but they need to find out why the protein is there. It can mean that you have a UTI (bladder infection) or kidney problems. Both are common in pregnancy, but need to be treated.

If you are this confused this early in your pregnancy and not getting the info you need/want from your doctor, I suggest you change doctors NOW. You have a long road ahead of you and need someone you can talk to and trust to help you bring this babe into the world.

Large levels of protein in your urine can mean preeclampsia. But they should know after doing the second test. That would have no effect on the baby's heartbeat.

At 10-12 weeks it can be hard to hear the baby's heart beat and sometimes the baby's heartbeat is right under yours, so it's hard to distinguish between the 2. So, this is completely normal.

Remember, it's your job to make sure you know what's going on before leaving the doctors office. If you're unsure about something, ask your doctor to explain it. They're not going to know if you understand or not, unless you speak up.

  • I didn't hear a heartbeat with either of my pregnancies until I was 14 weeks, so don't freak over that. The presence of protein has nothing to do with the heartbeat, and just means that your at high risk for pre-eclampsia which you and your blood pressure will be watched closely. At 10-12 weeks, it's 50/50 to get the heartbeat on doppler. Sometimes you can get it, sometimes you cant. All depends on where the baby is at that moment. My Dr tried since I was about 11 weeks, and finally got it at 14-15 weeks.

  • I didn't hear my baby's heartbeat through the doppler until I was 16 weeks. When I went to my 10 week appointment, my doctor told me she was going to go ahead and do an ultrasound because she would probably not be able to hear the heartbeat through the outside. I think 10 to 12 weeks is too early to be able to hear the heartbeat with the doppler. Don't worry about it. Your doctor should have told you not to worry if they couldn't find a heartbeat. Congratulations!

The protein in the urine can be early precamplsia, but if caught early it isn't a problem, and sometimes protein just shows p for whatever reason. its not linked to finding the heartbeat. The doctor probably had the doppler up too high.

Not finding the heartbeat is nothing to worry about. What bothers me with your story is that you says she was unsure if it was your heartbeat or the baby's. The baby's heart rate is double what yours should be. If she could not tell the difference I would fine another doctor. She sounds like she might not know what she is doing. Protein is okay as long as you don't have too much. Find another doctor.

I think your doctor is afraid to tell you more then she needs to right now. For some people, that's a good thing. For others, it creates anxiety. You have to pin her down and ask questions ... Why are you concerned about the protein in my urine? She might say, well I'm not right now but down the road it could be a sign of pre-eclampsia. The hearbeat is no big deal - the kid is in an awkward position. When do you get an ultrasound???

I'm 17 weeks pregnant and went to the doctor 2 days ago. We couldn't find the heartbeat, but that was because the baby was in an awkward position. We did an ultrasound just to be sure and the baby was doing great. :) Please, don't stress out.

Protein in the urine is a sign of pre-clamsia. A dangerous [regnancy related condition associated with high blood pressure.

Heartbeat can be heard in the womb as early as 8 weeks with a good doppler. It is worrysome, but like the dr said, you have to wait until your ultrasound to see.

    Good luck

Well if you are not 100% positive about how far along you are then it is possible it just could not be heard with a doppler. My suggestion to you is get a new doctor. Sorry, but your current one seems to be uninformative and uninterested in your pregnancy. Or you can call and ask a bunch of questions. Ask to speak to your doctors nurse. Good luck!
