Has anyone here had a meniscus transplant?

My daughter tore both her lateral meniscus. The Orthopedic Surgeon opted to repair them. One healed perfectly, however on the other one the repair didn't work. He does not want to remove it, as he'd have to remove the entire meniscus. If he removes it he guarantees osteo arthritis. Instead he is sending her to a big university hospital for a transplant. I know this is a relatively new procedure, and am wondering if anyone has any experience with this.

Thanks

This is really not a new procedure, it's been done since 1987.

If the patients are very carefully selected, this procedure can be quite effective. However, the long term results haven't been the greatest and they tend to really degrade after 10 years or so. It can also be difficult to get the allograft as mensicus allografts have to fit very precisely.

I could write further about the procedure, but instead I would refer you to the patient education section from the Cinncinnati sports medicine center. Dr. Noyes is a pioneer in this procedure and has some great info on his site. Also, If you have any specific questions, his research Director, Sue Barber-Westin, is a very good resource.
