The cause of decline in faith in God....Your Job?

When mankind's brain first evolved to some semblance of intelligence, what we did with it was learn how to make stuff.

We learned how to make tools, and to use those tools to create useful things, buildings, ploughs for agriculture, and libraries to store and share the collective knowledge (Eventually).

Given that mankind were all builders and farmers...creators of things, it is of little wonder that when trying to make sense of "Creation", everyone truly believed that to create something, there must be a creator.

When the early builders decided to build a town, the first thing they built, before a bakery, before a house, before all....was a church, a place to recognise what they saw as the best maker of stuff ever heard of, this is why churches are the oldest buildings in any given settlement.

Most people these days, and for the last 3 generations really, have careers or jobs that produce.....nothing.

How many people work in call centres, with no product at the end of their working days, except for the movement of money, from one place to another?

How many in marketing and advertising, selling "Airtime" or "Space" with no tangible results, except the rise in sales of a given product, generally a product that is not essential to your life, because such products need no advertisment, and again, the shift in money.

How many in banking....where money is quite literally created from nothing, and sold to our governments with attached debt, that our children's children will be paying off...with no tangible beneficial....solid product at the end?

Is it all that hard to understand, that when it comes to faith, people have none....not in a God, not in each other, not in a society which produces nothing but greed and the promotion of self above all?

Put yourself back a few hundred years...standing in a field...looking at creation...with your nature screaming to build...to make...to invest in society.

Would it be all that hard to see the only explanation of creation...was a creator...a God....the best damn builder of stuff in all of time?

Peoples lives these days are all about a number on a balance sheet...why should they see God as anything different....a social security number....a statistic....something requiring quantification.

Other people are merely a profit or a loss....and there is no mileage in faith....of any description.

Your thoughts on this subject please.

Please include your personal beliefs, and your occupation.

Thanks :-)

Update:

BR Tiger fan, you are of course quite correct.

The fact that qxz thinks I am "Pushing" anything at all, just indicates that people do not even have the inclination to read a couple of paragraphs to the end, much less form a valid opinion on the content.

If you read my question carefully, it soon becomes apparent that I have not postulated my own opinion on God...either way...I merely write what crosses my mind.

Update 2:

F. My view is quite pessimistic, I agree....but I see little to give me hope.

Update 3:

Capri7. You say there is too much to read, but you have obviously read it anyway...thankyou for your time, and you are absolutely right on your point that self is above all.

Update 4:

pencilnbrush. A remarkable, well thought out, and well phrased response....thankyou so much, I find validity and truth in many of your points.

Update 5:

And you have a great day too :-)

Update 6:

Gis. Here in England, especially in the wilder countryside...churches are the first built buildings in almost every case...and are the only buildings left standing from communities 600 years old or more.

Update 7:

Also...all please take note...I have not mentioned religion in any of this...Religion has about as much to do with God as Kojak has to do with hair gel.

Update 8:

℮Җ℮. All the proof you need will be found right here in Y/A.....take a tour of R+S and you tell me, who is the majority here?

Update 9:

Dendronbat Crocoduck. My sentiments exactly.

Update 10:

qxz. You are correct, I should take my own advice and read more accurately.

We all make mistakes, it is just important that we apologise for them sincerely.

You have my sincere apology :-)

even if i could step back three hundred years and view as you say.... i still wont believe that there is a creator. i create almost daily. im many things... im an artist, a salesman, and i have income properties that i work on.

so i do know all about creating something from nothing. i do know about beauty. i do know what it means to break your back all day in a yard and house and sit back at the end of it and look at what you have made much better and prettier. and i know about having a job where nothing is really created.

but i dont think what you stated is all the reasons why there is a decline in belief. i think there is a decline for the same reason there was one for me......

i got tired of waiting. i got tired of waiting for god to help me. i got tired of being on my knees praying for things to get better.

so i stood up one day...and said.... ill do it myself.

i know that there isnt a god that created all this... if there is... i dont really think he is too concerned with us. common sense tells me that. when i look at the world...watch the tv... (for as long as i can take it)... i see people doing terrible things to each other... terrible things that me...as an atheist... could never even think of doing!

    but yet it continues....

    starvation....war.... murder...rape....robberies.... genocide......

.... i refuse to see why god will step up back when we were soooo uneducated as a race but will not step up to the plate when it could do a real good to the race!.....

i watch how people treat each other...and i know there isnt a god.

the god i grew up knowing....was suppose to stop this sort of thing!

    but he/she doesnt.

thats why i know im on my own...and im ok with that. doesnt mean i can do violent vicious things to my fellow man or woman, doesnt mean that i wont continue to be a better man to the people in my life.

the world doesnt need a god... people have proven belief doesnt give you better morals

the people on this planet need to step up to the plate and realize that its only us.... and that we all need to be better to each other....we all need to try harder....we all need to quit praying for some one to fix what we broke for us...and quit blaming a devil for making us do all that are wrong in our lives

one thing is true.... it is your choice......

you can be a good person...... or a crappy person....its is up to you

hope you have a great day tho!

Powerful observations about the nature of modern day work & the shift in our values away from collectivism (primacy of our families & communities) to individualism. The problem IMHO isn't about the decline in belief in God but in a system based on usury where the common Man is a serf. The Catholic Church led an Inquisition to stifle dissent and has always been supportive of the ruling elite no matter how oppressive. The Church even supported Nazis and helped them escape Germany with Knights of Malta passports, not to mention the Jewish owned gold in Vatican vaults. So organized religion isn't always the model of enlightened behavior acting in the best interests of humanity. God of course is another thing and I'm not sure I believe people believe less in God these days. Great post tho. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

  • i agree but now days money makes the world go round. unfortunately because of the fact that people think of nothing except from how to make profit and have power... most of us have forgotten about god. god as you said is considered a number on a balance sheet. those few which remember him truly have faith but think about it... how many are those which remember him and for how long will they remember him? some of those people will remember him till they die...some till they get what they want from him ...and some till tomorrow.

god was the first to build with means that he was and is the best since he built the most marvellous creation ever...earth, nature, animals and humans (which betrayed him).

people tend to think and believe in themselves only and that's how it has been since the creation. adam and eve ate the apple despite what god told them. they wanted the power that god had and thought that by eating it they would have it.

Dear brother praise and glory be to God alone, this is really awesome what you have written,

please do write some more things that will spread the love for God for those who are without jobs will belive that there is God who provides all thier needs from its riches in heaven, and for those who dont belive in his power and glory, let them have the e.g of the guy who built titanic ship... made a commet vene god cannot come and sink this ship,

we are beliver in christ comming to judge the good and the evil, so stay firmly rooted in christ still his second comming may God who is Holy stand by you and your family, may his spirit encamp around you may you be blessed an be prospered as this is the right of the children of God, may your enemies be struck down like a dried leaves by the mighty hands of God

    Amen

While I think that your view of society is a little pessimistic, you certainly raise a good point as to how the psychology of faith in a creator might have started. This makes for an interesting read.

joiner /eclectic pagan i don t know where you get the idea churches were built first they were just built from stone because the church had robbed everyone and so had the most money thus as other buildings were pulled down and replaced churches have under gone continuous expensive restorations at the congregations expense you have to understand budget effects other buildings

As people become more intelligent the need for gods evaporates. Since science can prove that we evolved from lower life why would anyone not admit the truth god doesn't exist?

    Very interesting question and reasoning.

I agree with you, like the bible does:

(2 Timothy 3:1-5) But know this, that in the last days critical times hard to deal with will be here. 2 For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, ...

There for it shouldn't surprise us ;-)

Way too much to read here, especially this early in the morning.

My thoughts is that decline in faith in God, is that people have become lovers of self; instead of God. That's it in a nutshell. Part of that could be there job and wanting to get ahead and get ahead of God.

My faith is Apostolic and I work for a trucking company.

It's mostly due to education, enlightenment, rational thought, intellectual maturity... that kind of thing. The same kind of things that cause people to stop believing in Santa Claus, really.
