If you had acess to 60k through a Small Business Administration loan guarantee what business would you start?
I have been thinking about a Home Doctor franchise.. Earlier I was considering a lawn cutting, gardening business. There are a lot of people looking for work in those fields as well as painting and work as a handyman. I had over 80 people call me in the first four days mostly to work for me as mowers. I have very little equipment (just my own mower and weed eater) and there is a lot of competition.

Become a travel photographer, go on vacation for a year and see how many nice places I could capture on film.

If you're going to start your own business, you have to consider a couple things. What services or products are lacking in the area you're in - that you know how to supply?
Have you managed a restaurant? A hardware store? A landscaping business?
Borrowing $60k to start something, you need to already have a vision and a plan - just renting a place and buying the equipment won't cut it. Many people buy a franchise - it's more than just paying for a name, it is buying into a well established business system with guidelines and instructions to make you a success.I think with $60k, you could get a Subway Sandwich Shop.
I'm in a direct selling business system. Cost under $1,000 to start and the income potential is limitless (well, almost limitless - I know people making over $150k per month), and it can be done part time to start, while keeping your regular "pay the bills" job. It's not for everybody - you have to be able to manage yourself, and be OK with not having any employees to worry about or overhead to pay for or delivery of stock or manage accounts receivable or payable.
Do you want to start a lawn-mowing business because that is your dream, or are you open to looking at ways to make money with little risk and potential high return?

I would just start my own business as a handyman etc. Going into a franchise is very expensive, many policies and a great cost of doing business. The name may or may not be worth the extra cost but probably not.
