Can anyone tell me why iris are called flags?

When I was a child I used to hear them called that all the time, but not so much any more.

Thanks

Only German Iris are referred to as "Flag Iris." It's because they have four petals up and four down. The French Fleur de lei is based on them.

Dutch Iris are called "Dutch" and Japanese Iris are called "Japanese" and so on.
