Why does my fish tank look like jelly on top?

I have a beta fish. His name is Eleazar, conqueror of oceans.

Every time I clean his tank I put him in a cup of water from his tank, clean the tank, replace the water and add conditioner and wait for the water to assume the proper temperature and put him back in the tank.

The only things in his tank right now are :

Small glass pebbles/rocks

A small fake plant

A seashell

After a while, maybe a few days, the top of his tank looks like jelly. There are bubbles on the top that don't move, bunch up or pop.

Is Eleazar sick?

White slime is fairly common in unfiltered Betta tanks, it's said to be a byproduct of the Betta, used to stick bubble nests together, but with no circulation in a tank it will just build up. A Betta would benefit from a proper cycled filter to avoid this and keep the surface clear to take occasional gulps from.

It doesn't have anything to do with breeding, so don't be tempted to go down that root. Bettas bubble nest out of boredom and to establish new territories.

Doesn't sound as though he's sick, but it doesn't quite sound like a bubble nest, either. What size tank is he in? Does it have a heater and filter?

Bettas need at least a 2.5 gallon (or larger) tank, with a heater and gentle filter. Get the seashell out of there, that will mess up the water chemistry.

Don't completely empty his tank every time you clean it. You're starting the cycle all over every time you do that, very bad for the fish. You only need to siphon out 10-20% of the water and replace immediately with water that has sat out to come to room temperature and has been conditioned. You do not need to remove the fish to do this.

I strongly suggest you go to a book store, pet store, or public library and get a book or two on Betta care, and maybe one on aquarium keeping. There is much you need to learn about your little friend. Good luck!

they are all wrong, they havent read your question!!!

a bubblenest is where he has created a floating shellter with loads of tiny little bubbles that are all bunched up together! if the bubbles in your tank are not sticking together and floating seperate its not a bubblenest!

unfortunately i cant think of what could be causing this, it could be to do with your local water quality and too much/not enought conditioner perhaps. it doesnt sound like a sickness though so i wouldnt worry too much, if you are worried though you could try reserching it a bit more.

Can anyone help with my question please?

Im not sure what the substance is exactly, but Ive noticed with bettas you have to change the water frequently. They dont need a filter really... but just frequent water changes.

Sounds like your Betta is building bubble nests. He's not sick. It is actually a good sign that he is happy.

BTW, Great name for a Betta!

i dissagree with the dudde up above ^^

    idk tho

its fine, that happend to my betta, but it didn't do it again

maybe its like when they are ready to have babies?

but need a female to work the magic

cuz i know they lay their eggs in bubbly stuff at the top of the tank

and the males take care of them

HURRY by a female, and see what happens,

    for fun

i really think that's the deal

    good luck!
