Treating allergies and a cold?

I've never really had noticeable allergies until this year, but out of nowhere I just felt like sneezing all the time and had a chronic runny nose. A few days before that, my throat was sore but it went away; that came back slightly today, so I stopped talking.

I've taken allergy medicines, but I have a feeling this is also a cold. I'm pretty sure this is possible? If it is, would I be allowed to take Dayquil/cold medicine as well? I had something for allergies earlier which helped a little.

    Hi,

    PLEASE talk to your pharmacist!!

I currently have Strep Throat AND allergies hitting me at the same time, and I KNOW how miserable it can make you feel!!

BUT, dayquil/cold medications TEND to have an "antihistamine" added to them to "Dry up nasal secretions" during colds and to help you sleep--either NON-drowsy ones, or diphenhydramine--(aka--benedryl).....if you were to take this WITH your typical allergy medication you are already taking, you may feel anything from OVERLY TIRED to severely cotton mouthed, to so tired, you may even have odd respirations, or even a dystonic reaction......

OR....you could be lucky, and have nothing happen....but,.....why chance it.

    PLEASE ask your pharmacist!

Also, some allergy medications already have a decongestant in them as do SOME cold medications---this is the even RISKIER combination---a double dose of that----

    good luck to you!!

ps---if you do not get better, go get checked. Like other people mentioned, it could be a sinus infection or sinusitis, or you could have had strep like i did (my only symptom of strep was a BAD sore throat, and it was like I had an allergic reaction....my sneezing and cough was only from allergies and anything I sneezed was CLEAR...so, NOT the typical presentation at all---several days later I felt worse, but still...everything was clear, other than my strep test).

Source(s): healthcare provider since 1989/paramedic severe allergies currently a bad case of strep throat, and feeling AWFUL!!

    Hello,

It seems that you are having hay fever or allergic rhinitis.

Allergic rhinitis is a collection of symptoms, predominantly in the nose and eyes, caused by airborne particles of dust, dander, or plant pollens in people who are allergic to these substances.

When a person with allergies breathes in an allergen such as pollen or dust, antibodies are produced. When the antibodies are stimulated by pollen and dust, histamine and other chemicals are released. This causes itching, swelling, and mucus production.

You can take OTC antihistaminics like benadryl or Claritin. Longer-acting antihistamines are available by prescription. They cause less drowsiness and can work just as well. These medications include fexofenadine (Allegra), and cetirizine (Zyrtec).

You can also use nasal corticosteroid sprays like nasocort or flonase. Decongestants may also be helpful in reducing symptoms such as nasal congestion, but they should not be used for long periods. Cromolyn sodium is a nasal spray (Nasalcrom) for treating hay fever. Eye drop versions of cromolyn sodium and antihistamines are available for itchy, bloodshot eyes.

If the symptoms are intense then you can go in for immunotherapy

Hope it helps. Take care and regards.
