In the light of the recent report on child-abuse in the Irish Roman Catholic church?

...isn't it evident that organized religion is a haven for sadists, paedophiles and control freaks?

Why then does so much of humanity continue to allow itself to be subservient to "religion" which seeks only to control their lives and hinder their freedoms?

Update:

To those who believe that religion does NOT restrict their freedom of choice, I'm thinking about celibate octogenarians who issue edicts on sexual behaviour, and opinions on how condoms are an ineffective protection from HIV, in countries where men want to hear they don't need to use them, and of bearded imams who say you should not eat pork or consume alcohol, or that if you are raped you need seven MALE witnesses to dissuade your male family members from stoning you to death to protect THEIR honour.

Men will always be tempted by Satan to do evil things no matter where they live or what color they are.

  • It's horrible that this has happened, but there are numerous cases of abuse at all these reform schools, not just the Catholic Church. Again though, the media knows they will get more people to watch their shows if they talk about the celibate priests and nuns who have been abusing children than the married pastors and teachers who have been abusing children.

As one said, no matter what race, sex or age someone is, these types of people will always look for places where they can get close to children.

Here's some links about children who have been abused in faith-based reform schools here in America. There are HUNDREDS of schools in America TODAY that abuse children and nothing is being done.

This Irish Reform School is a ten year in the making report reporting over 100 years. There are 2500 cases, which means that's 25 people a year and though again, just one person is too many, there are thousands of other children who have been abused and yet not reported because it doesn't play into the media's hands.

For example, in Missouri there are many of these faith-based schools that still use corporal punishment and other types of punishment because Missouri says they don't need a state lisence to teach or act as a reform school. So the government never checks on these places until enough abuse cases have been made and again, this takes years. Usually someoneh as to die before the government will start looking into them.

Here's one link that talks about the ones in Massachusetts:

Here's Missouri, where faith-based schools don't need a liscense to teach:

Here's a woman's story about her experience in a reform school in California:

    1) In the light of the recent report on child-abuse in the Irish Roman Catholic church?

...isn't it evident that organized religion is a haven for sadists, paedophiles and control freaks?

No - since you have not bothered to share this report with us. Even if you had, the answer would almost certainly be "no". How can a report on a church in a particular country be sufficient reason to conclude that it is "evident that organized religion is a haven for sadists, paedophiles and control freaks"? That's like saying that Hillary Clinton makes it evident that all women are ugly and ambitious and without compunction. She is hardly representative of women (thank God), and the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland is hardly representative of organized religion.

    2) Why then does so much of humanity continue to allow itself to be subservient to "religion" which seeks only to control their lives and hinder their freedoms?

Because most of humanity has a smidgen of common sense.

i'll put my hand up as a catholic and say that the findings have really shocked me regarding the sexual abuse, and i apologise.

what i will not apologise for though i am sorry for the victims are the physical punishments , these were an accepted part of the then known society, the borstals , the juvenile detention centres, you can even go back to the industrial revolution times, public floggings, the stocks, convicts shipped off to other lands, the cane administered in schools up to the 60s.

i am glad the report has come out and the purging will not come soon enough. if this was a privately run org. it would have collapsed long ago

but the church will get strong again, wait and see

You'd think but too many believe, despite whatever their religion teaches, that somehow they have a direct line to God and anyone of a different opinion just doesn't 'understand'. I'm sure 'Mystical' thinks she's directly in touch with God. BTW, Mystical, if the majority of shoplifters turned out to be blond males, yes, humans would be suspicious of them. Kinda like Americans were suspicious of Middle Eastern guys in their 20-30's after 9-11. (Might not be right, but it is animal instinct (luckily, we have the brain power to learn and act differently)

It's unfortunate for the church that what the questioner says about that specific group has proven true so far.

  • Hinder freedoms? What freedom does "religion" hinder? "If the Son shall make ye free...ye shall be free indeed."!! I am not Catholic so I don't have anything to say about that except praying for all the people involved within their organization. God Himself organized His church. I have never felt more free and more alive since I got saved.

john stossel(?) did a whole hour (ABC's 20/20) on Protestant child abuse and in the report found that just as many Protestant clergy abused children as catholics. so what you should be asking is why do catholics get all the press? why do Protestants get the 'pass'? why do catholics get sued and Protestants not?

And you suggest that the removal of organized religion will equal the removal of sadists, pedophiles and control freaks?

    Interesting premise.

I saw a blonde guy shoplifting in Wal-Mart. Doesn't that prove that all blonde guys in the world are shoplifters and even worse? Why does humanity continue to allow blonde guys to live? Blonde guys take away our freedom to buy cheap stuff and we have to pay more because of all the stuff they steal!!

Source(s): Sarcastic Person. Do you feel as silly as you sound now?
