How to winterize strawberry pots?

I live in Ohio. Last year I left my terra cotta strawberry pot sheltered under my porch, but it never grew back this spring. I replaced all the plants this year and want to know in the fall/winter, how can I make sure the plants will come back next year?

the strawberry plants I have outside I keep a layer of leaves on top of them, naturally from the dropping leaves from my trees and the plants around them, I don't bother raking them in the fall, I rake them in the spring when things are growing.

for my potted plants I bring them inside into my garage and water them every so often so the roots in the pots dont dry out and die on me.
