Moto2 GP speculation question 1 of 2?

I know the rules and regulations are being ironed out regarding this class for 2010. I have a couple of thoughts, with the single engine being supplied by Honda (cbr600 based) but freedom to do what they like with the chasis. Do you think they will have freedom to re-design the airbox and exhaust system. Im thinking that small changes here could effect the power output. and if they cant touch the exhaust system doesnt that restrict what can be done to the chasis. similar with the airbox and intakes.

Therefore if you add the upside down Ohlins and brembo brakes arent they all going to be riding the same bike ? just a case of swingarm length to distinguish them ?

all Hypothetical as I say, the rules are not out yet. any thoughts ?

Update:

Hi Neilgtti, good to see you back. I heard the 60 teams thing too. did they say priority is going to the GP satalite teams, then the 250s ?? going to be interesting either way

    Hi Proc

As far as I'm aware the engines will be sealed, except with the possible use of a cassette type gearbox, so ratios can be changed. So the exhaust and airbox will be open to different designs.

The exhaust especially has a massive influence on power and torque characteristics of an engine, depending on length width etc. That for me makes up a little for the mistake (in my opinion) of the spec engine.

I think the rules are more or less finalised now. Prospective teams have had to apply by now, and I doubt many of them would have applied if they didn't know what to expect. I've heard somewhere that 60+ teams have applied! And there's only room on the grid for 30 something.

I'm really looking forward to this class, it should be a belter. And I firmly believe that eventually it will takeover as the premier class of 2 wheeled racing (after some changes to engine regs).

Edit: It's a shame there's only two 250's. I hope they get on board, and they're a competitive team with competitive riders. It will be interesting to see the comparative performance of the two machines. I wouldn't be at all surprised if The 250's still had the edge.

Tough to say on this one.

I really hope the rule book is thrown open on what the teams can do with the frames / swingarms etc.

Like NielGtti has pointed out in other questions we have asked, it would be great to see makes like Harris , Spondon , Tigcraft, Nikko Baker etc all coming back into main-stream racing.

Bimota have never been scared of making a well handling bike, so why not have ( another ) brand involved, but still using the CBR lump?

As for the Ohlins idea, I see where you are coming from.

Things like that can make a massive difference. R dP is the only Honda to run then , whislt all the rest of the riders have stuck to Showa. This must make a difference as why change them?

Time will tell with the rule book, but I hope it does not turn into [ another ] Triumph style one make cup.

I really like those super-agile 250's... I hope the new class will top that!

It's nice to know there will still be 250's, even if it's only two

I'm confident there will be an effort to make this class very interesting. I hope the 600cc is about the only resemblance these bikes have with stock 600 bikes, (not that I don't like stock 600 bikes ;)

    Welcome back Neilgtti!

Don,t follow all the technical stuff, but feel the authorities are trying to smokescreen racing by making the boffins as important as the riders (almost anyway)

[ going off what Neilggti says, then the whole thing starts to make sense, as there is a lot of room for development with each team if they can alter gearbox, exhaust and air intake...makes you wonder why they threw the ball to Honda....<^><..
