What does "1 mil" polyester tape mean? (electrical)?

ok, i know it has something to do with the thickness, but it is inconsistent with the overall thickness of 5.9 mils listed on this data sheet. http://www.permacel.com/files/ProductDetails.aspx?...

looking at the diagram, there are many different layers. Does the "1 mil" correspond to a particular layer? Someone help me figure out what these designations mean :P

    according to your link:

Backing material: 1-mil polyester film/laminated; 2-mil hemp paper

Given the total thickness of 5.9 mils, that leaves 2.9 mils for the adhesive, release coat, and lamination.

note this: "CAUTION: The above are typical values and should not be used in writing specifications. Customer is responsible to ensure product meets intended application requirements before approved for use."

The page has a "contact us" link. They would know a lot more than I would.

Under no circumstances should you use duct tape to repair electrical problems. Duct tape often contains metallic fibers or has a metallic coating that will actually conduct electricity and can pose a fire/safety hazard. Use electrical tape.

1 mil = 1/1000 (one thousandth) of an inch (0.001 in)

Duct tape is fine...but a better option is to replace the cord altogether as the tape only postpones the problem.
