I think our barn cats have Upper Respiratory infections...Is this curable or will it pass in time?
We have barn cats and they all seem to be having issues with sneezing and gunky-eyes. There are a few little kittens that are only a few weeks old, and their eyes are sometimes so puss-like they dry shut. I clean them off every day, but I was just curious if the cold will go away on it's own or if I am going to have to get them treated?
Well since people think I am abusing the cats, I am not. They are not actually "our" cats, the people we rent from are the owners. We just moved in here and the cats had already had this problem.(Upper respiratory infection) This is why I wanted to ask for advise, not for people to accuse me of abusing the cats or letting them give birth to more cats. If you do not have a nice word of advise for me, please do not answer at all. Also, I have already tried calling shelters and vet clinics to find out what I can do to get them all fixed...we do not have the money to do so and the landlords will not pay for them. Thank you so much too all who gave me a responce that was helpful!

The sneezing and coughing is definitely a URI but the eye problem could be something else.
Unfortunately this is something that will not go away on it's own. They need antibiotics. It is very common around barn cats, shelter cats and cats that are not vaccinated regularly. My male had the same problem with the sneezing as I got him from the SPCA.
Bring them to the Vet so he can swab their eyes and noses and get you some antibiotics.

An upper respiratory infection can be very serious in cats, especially kittens. And it usually needs treatment from a vet. They mostly get this when their regular colds went untreated and got worse. Some cats are prone to getting them more than others, but it is contagious and if one gets it, the others are likely to get it too. I would think you are going to have to get them treated, especially the kittens because they might die. If you can, bring the kittens inside until they are better and older and stronger. And get medication from your vet for them all. I agree with the person above who said to get them spayed and neutered. In my opinion, there is no reason to let them have litter after litter. You obviously have several cats in your barn right now. They will be enough to catch the mice. When they die off, get another cat or two and just keep up the population. Don't let them keep increasing the population. This leads to more animal cruelty from mean people, plus unhealthy cats and more strays.

No, it will not pass especially with kittens. If left untreated, the kittens will likely die! You need a vet ASAP so they will get antibiotics. This can also make a kitten go blind! Do not deny your sick animals vet care as this is animal cruelty so get off the computer and get to a vet now!

my cat had it and our vet said she wouldn't last the week end (She's 2 now) and they didn't give us anything so if they aren't eating water down some wet cat food (food that doesn't have chunks) and feed them with a syringe (just an open top on not with a needle) and feed them like that my cat's passed but you still might want to take it to a vet just in case.

Are you serious?
These aren't BARN cats - they are YOUR cats. As their owner, you are completely responsible for their care - including all veterinary care.
Upper respiratory infections can kill cats, or lead to a lifetime of respiratory problems.
Get your cats spayed/neutered and vaccinated - ALL OF THEM. There is no excuse for irresponsible breeding - especially when you can't even maintain their health.

They may need antibiotics. First try this. Get some l-lysene from a pharmacy and each can get 2 pills a day to start.(up to 4 a day 250mg per) it usually work

In an ideal situation you would bring the kitties to the vet. THey would give you amoxicillin and vetropolycin for the eyes.
However, if bringing the kitties to the vet is not possible, you can give them penicillin injections. You should give 1 cc per 10 pounds subcutaneously.
Best wishes

They will most likely need antibiotics, I would suggest talking to the vet.
