Does an anchor tattoo on the back of the neck signify anything?
Ok, probably a stupid question but my bf and I were in Applebee's the other night and he suddenly turns to me and said, "That girl must go down." Naturally, I was shocked and then I was like, "Why on EARTH would you assume that?" and he said because she had an anchor tattoo on the back of her neck. I asked if that's what that meant and he said he had no idea, he was being funny but what else could it mean? She definitely wasn't old enough to be in the Navy (she had to get another waitress when we ordered alcohol) or Coast Guard so aside from that, does it usually signify anything? Just curious!
Ok, let me make some things clear. My bf was joking when he said it...just being silly. I got the joke. My question was simply whether or not it DID mean anything in particular...that particular design in that specific place. His joke just made me start wondering. And yes, whoever said that the joke meant that an anchor goes down...yeah, that's what he meant.

The anchor usually signifies an experienced sailor or someone that has crossed the Atlantic (Navy). It represents stability.
On some occasions the anchor represents a spouse or boyfriend/girl fried. It indicates that the person in the stability in their life.
Most likely, if she is not a sailor she just likes how the anchor looks. Most people nowadays do not have any meaning behind their tattoos.

it doesn't really signify that she'll go down at all!
an anchor is an age-old maritime tattoo symbol, still commonly used in traditional western tattooing today.
some people have them tattooed to symbolise that they have been grounded [not house-arrest! i mean settled], and that they are going to 'hold fast'.
other than that, they are often found because they're really such a classic design.

Id think the joke is that the anchor, which when used to weigh down a ship physically goes 'down' to anchor the ship. He was making a joke that the girl goes down "like an anchor".

You can be 17 and be in the Navy with a waiver and most places you have to be 21 to serve alcohol.

If it was a joke, it was a crappy one; jokes are supposed to have some sort of funny punchline, and that was just...a 'o.O' reaction.
Sounds more like the guys just terribly confused.
