Do you know where I can find information about diets for kids with ADHD?
I have been told by a few different people that my son may have ADHD. Before I consider medication for him I would like to try changing his diet. I have heard that eliminating preservatives, food coloring, and processed foods can help. Does anyone have anymore information on this? Thank you!

I am a 26 year old male, I grew up with severe ADHD. I failed miserably in school due to my lack of interest which lead to lack of concentration or care. I have overly excelled in anything I enjoy and put my mind to, but in getting older, started to realize that there are things I have to put up with in order to succeed in life. You can't always do what you want all the time. I changed my diet to a low sugar diet, as well as eating more meats, vegetables, and I take a natural omega3 pill every day. The omega3 has been a HUGE help in my overall attentiveness. what these changes have done for me, is to get me into a mode of paying attention to my surroundings, bringing me that habit of paying attention. I keep taking my morning omega3 pill as well as eating healthy, and I feel much more comfortable and successful in life. with NO DRUGS! Before your son can go through his life altering mental changes of his own, you can definitely help him by changing his diet.
Another thing, is that people tend to see an ADHD child and want to keep him AWAY from caffeine. people with ADHD react in the opposite way to these things, whereas caffeine to adhd is a downer and will usually calm you down a focusable state. I drink my morning and afternoon coffee every day.
Anyway, these are just some ways I have dealt with my ADHD, and I feel I have been quite successful with them. Be more visual, less verbal lecturing. If he has homework to do for school, always, and I mean ALWAYS give him a place to get away from it for a few minutes, whether it's a puzzle book, legos, etc.... Give him that option of "if you feel overwhelmed with your homework, you can have 5 minutes of legos, or puzzles, but you have to get back to your homework". Guarantee he will eventually finish his homework all the way through without stopping. sounds weird but I promise.
Good luck!!! you've got a handful.

There are a lot of books about the subject. The theory is that the gut is not functioning properly (candida) and undigested food proteins enter the bloodstream, getting into the brain chemistry. The book called, "Allergies and the Hyperactive Child", by Dr. Doris Rapp discusses these things and gives much information on how to deal with it, including more than one diet. (The book is out-of-print, and available only online - but very useful) It also includes a list of symptoms that come along with the theory of food intolerances, and you may see some of them in your son, as many of the "other symptoms" are difficult to explain why they are experienced by people with this condition. Other books describe these things, but this one is very useful, and goes into a lot of detail on the subject, siting research done and other useful information. Using the anti-candida diet will work, as well as the diet in which foods are alternated. The thing to remember when starting a diet such as these, is that the symptoms may temporarily become a little more exaggerated at first, but after that things should smooth out quite a bit. We found this method very helpful with our son. He has recently graduated from college, even though he did not like school as a young child.

There is a lot of very useful information in books by Dr. Doris Rapp. One book is called, "Allergies and the Hyperactive Child". This book helped me so much when my son was young. It discusses the history of research regarding ADHD and diet, as well as the author's personal experience with this subject, and case studies and what happened with these specific children. It then goes on to list possible symptoms, including some physical symptoms, as well as covering very specific information for the elimination diet and other types of diets. You should, additionally, pay special attention to any information you can find regarding ADHD and Candida, or ADHD and leaky gut, which you can look up, on the internet. You can find the books by the author mentioned, through used, online booksites for very little money. They are VERY GOOD resources.

You are on the right track. Keep up with it and read up. Your research is important. Try to remain patient with your son, and supportive. Keep a good sense of humor, which is important in many instances, since not everything always goes as planned. You are a good parent in trying to be your son's advocate. Understanding what may be causing this is a great help in understanding that you are a good parent, and also that your son is probably trying to do his best, even when it may, sometimes, appear otherwise.

not sure where you can find great information on diets but i do know that you should stay away from anything and i do mean anything with HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP. it is like poison to a kid with adhd and it is poison to anyone in general. before you find any great sources on a specific diet do the best you can to prepare whole and if possible organic meals from scratch for your child as hard and challenging as i'm sure that will be. your child's health is worth it though. I wish you the best of luck in 'curing' your child and applaud your effort to do it the natural way first before toxifying your child with drugs which only suppress symptoms to and don't really get rid of the problem. Good luck. I wish you the best! :-)
