Daycare/ babysitting fee?

I'm unemployed and stuck at home posting resumes on line. My wife's co-worker started dropping off her kids for 4 hours a day 3 days a week. Granted, she brings enough food over for everybody, including me, but it wasn't my decision to babysit a 5 year old girl and a 13 year old "spec ail needs" kid ( losing his hearing and vision.) They dominate my T.V, computer, and guitar , fight , doing what siblings do, and i feel like I've been prostituted" for food. I find it very stressful and feel that working for food is kind of a rip-off. I feel a couple bucks ( in addition) for my time, would make me feel better about the situation. Anybody have any opinions on my plight? FYI, I am a man age 40. looking for work.

Ok i have a 5 year old, they are a total handful, and i have a baby, so i guess i kind of know what u are dealing with. I dunno where u live to tell you to going rate for child care. Fist of all they all need to know that what u are doing for her can end all of you with huge court fees if someone finds out. A couple years ago, the whole country was warned that there is NO LONGER allowed a baby sitter for more then 10 hours a week that is not a relative or a certified child care. So be careful. Make them aware of that. And tell them all that you were forced into this, for food and its just to much to do with these kids not to get some other kind of incentive. Food is fine but for a 5 yr old a spec needs child, the going rate where i am is between 5-10 bucks and hour per child.. that is the in home babysitters. Child care centers is about 150-300 bucks a week, PART TIME.... Talk to your wife, tell her how you feel and whats up..

If you were shanghaied into this situation I would take it up with your wife. Let her know how this makes you feel. But there may be repercussions. Your wife's co-worker may need the help and not be able to pay you much, plus the general going rate for professional child care is 2-4 dollars an hour per kid. (At least where I live in Nor Cal) So that's only about 75 bucks a week and you may lose the free food. . .so if you really are frustrated talk to your wife and find a better situation and maybe work out a reasonable pay!

Instead of stating upfront to a customer a set price for your babysitting services, perhaps take a reverse tactic in which you ask the client: "What do you think is a reasonable price to pay for my services?" I recall a story about my friend's repair of a computer in Beverly Hills which is a high-income area. He was about the charge the client a $50.00 per hour fee, however, before he could present the bill, the customer gave him $300 for his services because the customer felt that the service was valued according to his income level. And there's lesson to be learned here. Why not temper your fees according to the income level of your clients, which in the long run is a much fairer way of operating your babysitting enterprise.

    Good luck!

I think she should stop bringing food for you and pay you. She should still have to provide food for her children. I don't know how to advise you on what to charge but I will tell you what I pay.

I have 2 kids 2 yrs and 5 yrs. I pay 235 wk. I do not have to provide food and my kids are their all day long. I would talk to your wife. It is unfair to you and the kids involved if you feel that you are being forced into childcare.
