so everyone hates Iams?

it seems everyone on this board hates Iams dogg food. What do you suggest instead? I want something that Petsmart carries, and costs comparable to Iams. I looked at ingredient lists and nothing else seems much better.

My recommendation is that you don't totally depend on the answers you get on the Internet when choosing what to feed your dog. You should find a veterinarian that you trust and ask them what to feed. Veterinarians did not become dogtors because they wanted to get rich--they do it because they love animals.

Also, contact the companies you're interested in (by phone is best) and question them about their products, their ingredients, their science, and what they know about dog nutrition.

That said, I’ve personally fed either Iams or Eukanuba with my dogs over the past 12 years, which is long before I started working for the company a little over a year ago. My fuzzy children have done wonderful on the diets.

We (Iams) have been in business since 1946. Our diets are based on science, with high quality ingredients, and strict quality control. We don’t use any fillers in our products. Each ingredient has a specific purpose to address the nutritional needs of your dog.

We believe that high-quality animal-source proteins contain all the essential amino acids dogs need, whereas some plant-based proteins may be deficient in some essential amino acids. Although dogs are classified as omnivores, they may be best fed as carnivores. We've found that feeding diets with primarily animal-based protein sources helps maintain muscle mass in dogs, helps reverse some age-related changes in skeletal muscles in senior dogs, and can help enhance long-term health and well-being of adult and senior dogs. That's why we choose protein sources that are animal-based for our diets.

We've also found that carbohydrates, in the right combination, can be an excellent source of energy. The slow, even breakdown of the carbohydrates grain sorghum, corn, and barley results in moderate, stable blood glucose levels after a meal. By minimizing swings in blood glucose, diets containing such blends supply sustained energy.

Regarding our feeding trials, please check out www.IamsTruth.com

If you have any questions about our Iams products, we’d be happy to discuss our products with you at 800-525-4267 M-F 8AM-5PM EST.

I hope this information has been helpful to you. Good luck to you and your four-legged friend!

It varies which brands I can find at various Petsmarts. Take the list with you and just see which of them the one in your area carries. Another option is to look for a smaller mom & pop pet store close to you. Their prices tend to be much better and they have only the brands listed above. They don't even carry Iams. You'll find most of these prices are comparable to it.

I easily have a ten month previous Shih Tzu and that i feed her a grain loose kibble referred to as style of The Wild and she or he's extremely healthful. a million. A Holistic / organic form of nutrition may be great for you canines. listed under are a itemizing of ingredients, style of the Wild, Innova, Innova EVO (grain loose version), well being, stable Gold, Canidae, Nature's type, Orijen, poultry Soup For the puppy Lover's Soul, Eagle %., & Blue Buffalo just to call some. 2. those ingredients are healty on your canines because of the fact they do no longer incorporate soy, corn, by-products, wheat, fillers, or manmade flavors. those ingredients reason many allergens in canines which contain itching, chewing at there paws, and loss of fur. 3. each and each bag and or can of nutrition could have the feeding training on it. 4. those ingredients will are available in a type of flavors. 5. you will no longer locate those ingredients at Petsmart different than for Blue Buffalo and a few you would be able to locate at Petco, yet a community Petstore could carry it or examine on there web pages. i wish it is helpful! =o)

As far as grocery store foods go, I dont think theyre as bad as most.

At least the first ingredient is meat. I donate Iams to my local shelter....I figure its better than most of the food they get.

But I prefer better foods for my dogs and foster dogs.

Check out Wellness (at Petco, not sure about Petsmart). Foods without cheap fillers are generally more expensive, because the ingredients are more expensive.

Blue Buffalo is much better and Petsmart carries it. Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul is better too. People don't like Iams due to the cruel practices that the company has.

Check out the list of ingredients. PetsMart carries the brands that most markets do. I like Canidae For All Life Stages, check out the ingredients, they have a site online, but it's NOT sold at places like PetsMart, you have to get it from a good pet store or a feed store.

  • You really aren't going to find a high quality dog food for cheap..

Im probably going to get multiple TDs for this, but,

If Iams is working for YOUR dog, keep your dog on it.

YOU know what is best for your dog.

But if you want to look for something a bit healthier..

    Brands like

    Merrick

    Canidae

    Blue Buffalo

Chicken soup for the Pet lovers soul

    Wellness

    Orijen

    I always say this..

"You may be spending more on higher quality dog food, but in the future you will be saving money from vet bills resulting from feeding lower quality dog food."

But like I said before, feed what works for your dog.

    *Keep in mind*

Stay away from fillers like corn, by-products such as "Chicken / another meat By-Product Meal"

You want to look for Meat as a first ingredient, then the other added ingredients such as rice.. etc.. etc.

Are there any smaller pet stores in your area? Sometimes small stores sell better selections - i get my dog's food from a place called Benson's and they have a huge variety of good food.

In general you want to get a food with no corn or by-products, and named meat meals. You may have to spend a little bit more than you want to, but why wouldn't you spend an extra couple buck for the health of your dog?

    Blue Buffalo is decent quality.

Becase it has a lot of fillers in it. You're not going to find high quality food as low due to better quality ingredients.

I think you should get Taste Of The Wild. TOTW is a PERFECT dog food, It has NO grains. Idk if Pet Smart carries it but if they don't go to Tractor Supply Company. As you will see TOTW is not on there, but Iams is.
