How can you know for sure that you are a Christian?

I spent a long time preparing a very thorough explanation, only to have it eaten and erased by a computer glitch. So, this is the short version:

I encourage everyone who considers himself to be a Christian to ask himself these questions:

    1. Are you responsive to God's guidance when it is in opposition to your own will?

Can you recall times when God told you to DO something you DIDN'T want to do, or when God told you do NOT do something you DID want to do, and and you obeyed God because you love Him?

    2. Are you committed to Christ regardless of the cost?

If someone pressed a loaded gun against your head and demanded that you renounce Christianity or die, what do you think you would say?

C.S. Lewis said, "You never know how much you really believe anything until its truth or falsehood becomes a matter of life or death to you."

What if being a Christian cost you your home, your job, your safety, your family, and/or your friends? If push came to shove, is there anything you would not give up for your relationship with Jesus?

Every Christian should listen to 2 audio sermons on this website:

    http://www.livingwaters.com/

They are on the right hand side under "Foundational Messages:"

"Hell's Best Kept Secret" and "True and False Conversions."

One thing is for sure: eternity is a long time to be wrong. Better safe than sorry!

Since a Christian is a follower of Christ for whom Jesus is Lord, the first self-check is whether you believe everything Jesus taught. If you have reservations about whether something Jesus taught is true (e.g., hell), you are merely an admirer of Christ and not a Christian.

The check Jesus provided is to examine behavior, or in his words, "You will know them by their fruits." Those who commit the sacrosanct sins of the people of this world, abortion or homosexual practices, are not Christians.

Those who became Christians in Acts immediately were baptized. They obeyed Christ's teaching in John 3:5, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit." It is by baptism that we become God's children, reborn in his family. Thus, if someone neglects baptism, that would indicate that he or she doesn't believe Jesus, doesn't understand him, or doesn't obey him, though that person might be an admirer of Christ.

Those who believe everything Jesus taught and make a good faith effort to obey his commandments are Christians. That doesn't guarantee salvation, but becoming a Christian is the way to friendship with God.

    Cheers,

There is a sermon on sermonaudio.com that I heard about a year ago entitled "The Blessedness of the New Covenant" with the speaker explaining a covenant made with Abraham, extending all the way to today, saying that God absolutely adores His people, and His people have always said, "I KNOW! I KNOW HIM!!!" The people of that covenant love His law, they seek His face, they have hearts of flesh and not of stone, they follow their Shepherd.

Yes, we have the "checklists" of creeds (thank you "anna") and confessions and catechisms, and there are works involved as a result of our relationship with God. But the blessedness of a new, better covenant, and the sign and seal of baptism, puts God's people into a special relationship with Him that not everybody has. And those who know, seek out those who know, train up their own children in knowing, and stand as a witness to the world so they may know.

We are given that covenant by grace, and grace alone. Grace gave the Israelites law to follow to re-establish a relationship lost through Adam, grace gave us Jesus Christ, the second Adam, to not only give us our high priest, but to allow us to boldly approach the throne. And that covenant -- that blessed, blessed covenant -- not only says "I know" but includes a still, small voice whispering, "I will keep you and never let you go."

    Soli Deo Gloria!

The best checklist is the Apostle's or the Nicene Creed. If your beliefs stack up to it, and if you have accepted Jesus' forgiveness for your sins and acknowledged him as Saviour and Lord, you are a Christian. Baptism is on biblical record as being part of this, since we are told to preach the Gospel and baptise the people "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

And of course you have to live like it's true, because it is. If you say the words but don't live them in your daily life, your profession of faith is hollow and empty.

    1 Thessalonians 4:14-18

when Messiah returns those that are Christians will rise to meet Him in the clouds.

if you don't get to rise with the rest then you are not a christian.

1 john 2:4 the one who says,i have come to know Him,and does not keep His commandments,is a liar, and the truth is not in him but whoever keeps His word ,in him the love of G-D has truly been perfected.

by this we know that we are in Him

Knowing that you are a Christian is something you take on faith. It's been my experience that a lot of people get hung up on "feeling". God's Word says that we are saved by faith. It also says that Jesus is faithful to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. See, Jesus has already done His part. Our part is simple, but it isn't easy. We confess to Jesus that we are sinners. That is, we have knowingly and unknowingly done things that are against God's desires for us. We tell Jesus that we are truly sorry for this. We ask Him to become our Savior and to help us to become like Him. It is a growth process. Sometimes we make great strides. Sometimes we fail. The important thing is to grow in our relationship with Him by communicating with Him in prayer, studying His Word to show ourselves approved, and striving to daily allow Him to rule our lives and change us from the inside out. Don't go on feelings. Some days you just don't "feel" saved. Th
