Do you feel it is wrong for your child to say "butt" or to say it near them?

Ok, my mom and I are all split on this particular subject due to my little sister (2) and my son (1) being in the house. I feel butt is not a bad word, its just what it is. My mom says its a bad word, that it's proper to be saying bottom. Who do you think is right?

Update:

Thanks for all the answers!

we call it a hiney! but my daughter does know it as a butt. i don't think its a bad word. at least you ain't call it a bobo! i think your both right cuz people do call it both plus many other names. you and your mom will have to work something out on what to call it.

Your Mom is still living in the 50s. Both bottom and butt are perfectly acceptable words.

When she goes to the grocer, does she have an alternative for pork butt or does she just buy bottom round because it is a more acceptable word?

It depends on how you want your child to grow up. I want my children to be as polite as possible so we don't use words that are considered impolite such as butt or fart. There are much more polite ways to put these items and we use those words instead. Now....if you were actually using the proper term "buttocks" then I don't really see the issue, but I personally would use "gluteus maximus" instead for a proper term.

Bottom or backside sound better. If you are living in your mother's house you need to respect her wishes on such a minor point while there. The politer your child and sister are at this age the better for when they are older. They could be using worse language that butt, there are nicer words to use.

    LOL

Butt is not a bad word just like penis is not a bad word and vagina is not a bad word.

It does depend HOW you imply it (although I'm sure that's not what you are talking about)

Butt is butt..not a bad word.Even the prudish person I know agrees with that.

I personally CANNOT stand "hiney" lol.I hate that word.

    Your right.

Ussuly it's older ladys like your mom who think that butt is a bad word , but I dissagree theres really nothing wrong with it.

It's not like you kids are going to grow up to be perverts just because they say the word butt.

I agree with the first response. It's not bad... But, saying bottom does sound nicer.. So, it's really up to you. When my son says butt, I don't get upset.. But, I try to tell him to say bottom. It really boils down to manners and how much you care about your child's manners. I'm sure in elementary school, the teachers won't tell the children to sit on their butts, and they probably would appreciate it more if you taught your child to have courtesy when referring to a butt... or bottom....

    It's better than "@ss".

"Butt" is a perfectly acceptable word for children of that age to use for that part of the body. Your mum needs to pull her head out of her BUTT.

Butt is not a bad word. It's a part of the body, just like arm, leg, elbow.

We use the word butt around our two year old and when the twins arrive, them too.
