Both "affect" and "effect" can be used as a noun OR as a verb and share the sense of "influence," and because of their similarity in pronunciation, they are sometimes confused. More commonly used as a verb, "affect" means "to act on" or "to move" (e.g., His words affected the crowd so deeply that many wept.). When used as a noun, however, "affect" is prounounced with the stress on the first syllable (AFF-ect) and is a technical term in psychology and psychiatry (e.g., The patient's affect seemed to change hourly.). More commonly used as a noun, "effect" means "result" or "consequence" (e.g., The government warned of the serious effects of the oil spill.). The verb "effect" means "to bring about" or "to accomplish" (e.g., Her administration effected radical changes.).
