Mika Häkkinen, Where Are You Now?

When he left in '01, there was plenty of noise about this being a step back and a rest and regroup time for Mika. Then we hear very little.

Then he shows up driving in a German touring car venue for Mercedes, where he completed the '07 season.

At 41, he is a bit long in the tooth, but, could he possibly return to F-1 for a couple of swan song years? Or will he, as he claimed in '08, stay behind the scenes and work in some sort of driver management capacity?

Wikipedia sees him thusly:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mika_Hakkinen

Opinions please. Can he, would he, will he try to turn back the clock and get back in the cockpit of an F-1 machine?

Hakkinen back in F1 full time would be a major shock, not least because it appeared that he had lost his nerve during his final season in F1. There were quite a few weekends in 2001 where he just didn't perform, very similar to what Raikkonen has been doing since he won the title.

He looked a bit more comfortable with a roof over his head in the DTM, but I don't think he's got the will to commit to a full season of racing, whatever the series. His personal life has suffered from his racing career and I don't think he wants to spend so much time away from his family any more.

If we see Hakkinen actually competing again, I would have thought it would be something like a one-off drive at Le Mans, or maybe the Spa 24hrs...just don't see him getting into a single seater to race again.

Mika has been doing some rallying. I think his last appearance was at the Arctic Rally a few months ago. I think Kimi had a go in that rally as well. Other than that Mika is a "Responsible Drinking ambassador" for Johnnie Walker who are sponsoring Mclaren. He travels around to the events talking to people about drinking responsibly. I met him in Singapore Last year.

I doubt he will ever be back behind the wheel of an F1 car. He did test a few years ago and was well off the pace of Kimi and Montoya. I think that any racing he does now will be purely for fun. I hope to see him behind the scenes though.

He's currently competing in the WURC (World Unicycle Racing Championship).

(check the wikipedia site to see where I'm coming from) ;-)

Seriously though, I don't see a return to F1 driving on the cards. A brilliant driver, but as you say, a tad too old. Personally I would hate to see him attempt a come back and just not cut the mustard. That would be sad.

I know that he has competed in some rallies. I'd love to see him in the WRC!

I think he tested for McLaren in 2006, at around the same time Hammy was, if I'm not mistaken his times were bordering on awful, I think he was over a second away from Lewis.

I think he could of made a successful come back in 2003/4 but next season it will be 9 years since he raced in F1, that's a big, big ask.

Did you see him in series 12 of TopGear, teaching Captain Slow (James May) how to drive fast and win races? My prediction is that Mika will return to F1 as James May's manager.

i wish no longer. no longer purely because of the fact he's soooo booooring, yet because of the fact 'returns' hardly artwork out - look at Schumacher! in certainty his return has been a huge non-journey (in certainty one ought to point he's a legal duty accessible) and that i won't be able to make certain it being plenty distinctive ought to Mika discover himself a seat. And with which team in spite of everything? a minimum of Schumacher's return replaced into to a 'German team' and you need to make certain why.
