My kitten is always chasing or biting her tail. Does it hurt her? Is it normal?
I've had this new kitten for about 3 months now. She literally loves to chase her tail. When she catches it, she bites it. It looks like she's biting it with force. Does it hurt her? She never bleeds or anything, but it worries me sometimes, because I don't want her to hurt herself.
Thanks to everyone who answers!
Thanks to everyone who answered. My kitten still does it, and probably will for a while, but now I know it's just natural behavior! I do know alot about cats, but I never knew why she did that! :-P

I never could figure this out in 25 plus years as a cat owner. For some reason some cats become obsessed with there tails and it is the funniest thing to watch.I guess god gave them a built in toy for those days when they have to amuse themselves..lol.I always figured they didnt know it belonged to them but if you watch closely when they really get into it they will wiggle and wave it around to make it more enticing. They may get overstimulated and be a bit rough with it but I have never seen any of mine actually cause severe damage,so just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

My cat's 5 months now, and ever sense I got him at 2 months he's been biting/chasing his tail. He usually meows when he gets hurt, and he never does when he's playing with his tail. So I know it doesn't hurt him. My other cat used to do it when she was a kitten as well, I think it's just a way to pass time for cats and have fun :P kinda like all the funny, silly, things we do as humans when we are bored. It shouldn't hurt or harm her.

I do not think she is hurting herself badly, as long as she is not biting so hard she ends up bleeding. My eleven year old cat *still* chases his tail. And to make it even more interesting, he does it on top of an eight inch wide ledge by the stairs. Pretty spry for an old guy, eh? When the 6 year old cat was a kitten, he used to let her play with his tail as well, deliberately letting it hang down over the edge of furniture, twitching it oh, so enticingly.

it wont hurt her! if it was, she would stop. but its just nature that cats chase stuff and in this case the closest thing is her tail! she'll probably stop this when she gets older but for now she still wants to play all the time!

Taylor,this is typical cat behavior.She is bored.Get her a toy like a
Cat Dancer and interact with her.Better still, adopt a friend for her.
Cats are social and will chase each other. Then perhaps, will curl
up with you.
