Ficus tree - leaves dropping off :(?
I have a banana leaf ficus tree in my living room that is losing leaves rather quickly. The leaves that are on her are lovely and green. She is losing about 10-20 leaves a day.
I do not have a green thumb so any help offered is appreciated.
If someone could give me some more info on this tree like watering and light/shade.
Thanks so much!
TY Fluff!
I thought these trees were resiliant and easily managed.
Thanks Paw!!! :)

Ficus needs filtered light - should be by a window.
If you need low level light plants, there are others that do better.
They also require consistent watering - they are not particularly forgiving of inconsistent watering.
I would not consider ficus a low maintenance plant.
Pothos is more my idea of low maintenance. :o)

It can be alot of things. Need more information. The obvious first answer is that it needs re potting. A fiscus will often start sacrificing leaves if the tree is root bound. The second thing is that it may need more light but I really doubt this is the problem. If it has been fine, root bound seems more likely. If light has been cut back for some reason, just get a gro light and boost the light level. You can tell if the plant is root bound by picking it up and seeing if roots are coming out of the bottom. You can also poke your fingers around in the dirt at the top of the plant. If you feel roots, you definitely need to re-pot.

I have a booklet here on the many reasons Ficus lose leaves. Over/underwatering, too hot, too cold....or a change in temperature. As little as 5 degrees will begin leaf drop Also root bound, pests such as scale (any sticky stuff?) or red spider mites, cold air drafts, too much sun, too little and so on.
If you do a web search you'll find several site of fellow Ficus sufferers. here's one: http://hubpages.com/hub/Ficus-Tree-Problems

This website dedicated to ficus tree problems should give you the answers you need. I think it is an interactive site where you can ask specific questions if you don't get the info you need. Good luck.
