I almost just died, help me to prevent it from happening again.?

So, I took a drink of my soda and, as does happen from time to time, it went down the wrong tube. Well, this has happened before, and is usually no big deal, hack for awhile and your good. But, this time, I could not get any oxygen into my lungs. I was literally choking and I began to feel lightheaded. I was trying to gulp in air in between coughing fits, but nothing would go in my lungs. I don't even know how I got out of it, but at one point, I really thought I might possibly die. Then, I thought about doing the Heimlich to myself, but would that help if it was liquid? I'm sure this won't happen again, but just in cases, please help me to know what to do.

Update:

I should add that the reason I started choking in the first place is that my cat jumped on me and caused me to inhale briefly right as I was gulping. So thanks for the advice on how to not breathe in while I am drinking, but it was just a freak thing that happened. What I was wondering is does the Heimlich work in that type of situation, or what does, if not.

Well, when you drink, you use suction from drawing in air to also bring in liquids that are held in the mouth obviously for a short time before you swallow. Take smaller sips, should definately help. if you end up in a dangerous situation like you were before, the Heimlich maneauver may work but only if applied by someone else. It's not self sufficient because you will have no leverage. Usually someone will help if you show the "universal sign of choking". Basically hands at your throat

The contract ideas are good ones, even if you don't have any intention of suing. Also, definitely contact your state funeral association, as another poster suggested. At the very least, this is an obviously unethical practice. In regards to giving the gowns to the hospital instead of the funeral home, definitely give a call to the Pastoral Care departments of any or all of your local hospitals. Someone there will be happy to help you! They may be very willing to accept the gowns on behalf of parents ans see that they reach their intended recipients for free, and they'll probably also be able to get the word out to many local clergy people that your group is offering this service. Many blessings...

Okay so what was the lesson, first off even if you plugged up your mouth you can still breathe through your nose, if you would have tried to calm yourself down , which is really difficult when you are having a coughing fit and feel like you can't breathe.

This may only happen once or twice in your whole life so, if it was a chunk of food then yes throw yourself on a chair or counter, but if it happens again try to calm down first and breathe.

It may be possible to touch your uvula to induce vomiting. I have been scared of this for a while. You may also try screaming. Some people say don't panic but that is only if you are with some one that will help you. I, personally, am a 'stunt dummy' for such activities, and will be putting myself through this tonight to end the deaths of many who come across this problem.

it could be that your epiglottis isn't functioning properly or it could be because you try to breathe and drink at the same time. I often breathe and drink simultaneously and so the "down the wrong pipe" syndrome occurs a lot. It's tough, but try to *not* breathe while you drink. If that doesn't help, you should see a doctor about it.

  • well if you are trying to drink the soda first and then inhale, you probably shouldn't do that. spit it out right then instead of making it go down.

Did you have a panic attack? I agree though, contact a doctor. That doesn't seem so normal.
