betas and guppies living together?
I was thinking about getting a 5 gallon tank and getting a few small colorful fish. I've only kept one beta in a bowl so this will be the first tank I've actually had. What I'd really like to have are betas and guppies. Would they be able to cohabitate? How many could I keep in a 5 gallon? Would it be better to get a female beta? Is it okay for them to eat the same food? And I know guppies need aquarium salt, would this hurt the beta? Do they need a heater to maintain a stable temp? Any other info would be helpful on keeping the two together and other fish suggestions are welcome.

I agree with FISHMAN, 5 gallon's a decent size for just the Betta.
Different Betta's have different personalities and as a result different tolerance levels of other fish. Bettas will most probably attack guppies, because their fancy tails make them look like bettas; and 'potential' threats. You can't really even keep females in a 5 gallon tank, if you want a group of females, you'll need a much bigger tank.
But you could keep a couple of guppies in a 5 gallon... they don't shoal, so it'd be a good option.

(Lightnin, none of the fish you listed are suitable for a 5 gallon tank!)
While there have been instances of guppies and bettas working, they're few and far between and often not a long term set up.
A 5g is technically fully stocked with 1 Betta anyway, its a very small volume. Every Betta, male or female, has a different personality, some can be peaceful or timid, others can be hyper aggressive.
Guppies are very active and need over 10 gallons.
With the 5g go with 1 Betta only. Don't forget to cycle it first!

Betas and guppies wouldn't be a nice mix in your five-gallon tank. Guppies, yes, betas, no. Here are some suggestions for other nice fish in replacement for the betas:
1. Bloodfin
2. Cape Lopez Lyretail
3. Striped Lyretail
4. Christy's Lyretail
5. Platys
6. Dwarf Gourami
7. Neon Tetra
8. Diamond Tetra
9. Lake Tebera Rainbowfish
10. Angel Fish
11. Siamese Fighting Fish
All breeds of the fish listed here are fairly simple to breed. The platys and the Angel Fish are extremely pretty and simple to breed.
Pre-caution: Do NOT (I repeat: do NOT) keep more than ONE male Siamese Fighting Fish in one tank. The males with fight until one dies, but the female Siamese Fighting Fish won't behave in the same way.

don't get fancy guppies bettas won't like the flowing tails of a guppy and could rip them off opt for with warning. that's advisable to think of of a distinctive form of fish to place with your guppies. Harlequin Rasboras are extreme high quality

A single betta requires a 5+ gallon heated and filtered aquarium. Bettas dont fight with many fish but guppies are one type that they will fight with occasionally. I would not risk it and a 5 gallon is only big enough for a betta.

you can have up to one inch of fish per gallon of aquarium and yes you will need a filter and a heater and unlike betas guppies need an air pump .i doubt that the betas will get along with the guppies they will most likely eat them.
if you want small colorful fish you can always get swordtails or mollies to go along with your guppies they wont have any problem living together.
hope i helped
