All human beings must perish, but cant our works survive us? I know death is inevitable, but isnt what we leave behind proof that our passage through life mattered?

    Ars longa, vita brevis.

That means "art lasts, but artists' lives are short." Hippocrates said that in 300BC, and I suspect most people believe it's true.

But I think life matters, even if we don't leave anything lasting behind. Everybody leaves something behind, his "biographical footprint" so to speak.

Some people, an invalid shut-in who lost all of his family, e.g., might leave something very minimal behind. Others, like criminals, leave behind hurt and suffering. But their lives still mattered; they were children of God and our brothers.

Absolutely. However, there are two types of works...

    (1) those that leave an impression here on this World

    (2) and those that leave an impression in Heaven for eternity.

Most people will not remember me five years after I die, but there are many who will be in heaven who will remember me for all eternity.

This is the works that I want to survive me.

Very true. And the producer of the works need not be remembered. As long as the works themselves have lasting effects.

well yes and no. IF you believe behind something historical that will be remembered by humanity than YES. But for most of us the answers is NO. Everything we leave behind will eventually be forgotten by those that know us when they die.
