transplant patient & pets?

I was told by my surgeon that I may be a candidate for a pancreas transplant. I understand that transplant patients have to be on lifelong immunosupressant drugs. What I am curious about is where that leaves my pets. I have quite a few...dogs, a cat, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish...I was wondering if I was going to have to get rid of some of them! I am most concerned about the parrot, because no one but me handles him. I could get other family members to help out with the "dirtier" jobs with the other animals, but no one else will play with the bird, so I am afraid I will have to rehome him. Anyone knowledgeable and know the answer? Thanks!

I had a kidney/pancreas transplant in Aug 2005. I have one dog and one bird. My surgeon rated the animals he preferred I be around in this order: 1. dog 2. cat 3. bird He didn't mention reptiles/fish. He was not concerned about the dog; what I did with the bird was let him stay somewhere else for 3 months, and then I brought him home. I wore gloves and a mask whenever I cleaned his cage. I never had any problems. Maybe you could suggest the glove and mask idea to your surgeon. I would also ask him about the reptiles/amphibians/fish.

I also suggest you go to the message boards at kidney.org. There are many more transplant recipients there (kidney and also pancreas sometimes) and they probably have more info.
