Is asking questions slowing you down point-wise?

I can see how that'd slow you down from reaching Level 7, and boy is it frustrating to reach Level 7. It seems like I've been trying to get there for the past two forevers!! But I try to keep the asking to a minimum and when I ask a bunch of questions in one week, it usually has to do with the fact that I've either gotten a certain amount of points or I haven't asked any questions in a long time.

I just closed my question today, but I don't think I will be asking anymore until I've come up with an interesting question to ask.

1. I got there basically with my Best Answer percentage and answering lots of questions. Actually, I didn't get this far very quickly. It tooks *lots* of time. I've been on here for nearly 2 years and I'm not on Level 7 yet? That shows how quick I am.

2. If I got suspended on Y!A, I'd fall over and die. I have *so much* history with this account, I don't know what I'd do if it was all gone within an instant. God, I think I'd lose my mind and cry for, like, a week. But after that, I imagine I'd be excited to do everything that I did wrong the first time right the second time, so, although there would be a lot of restrictions up until the fifth level and I'd have to find all my contacts again, I'd still be a little excited.

However, I figure I'd take some time before I got a new account, so that would be the part that sucked the most.

3. It sometimes makes me mad or other times I'll just ignore them. I believe that's under the "Cheating" section of the Community Guidelines, so I can report them if I really want to. Fortunately, I don't have to do that often because it doesn't happen to me often. Besides, I'm a little more lenient about that than other people might be, so oftentimes I don't think twice about it.

4. I don't know. I have no idea, but I imagine it's in the millions. I'm always logged into Y!A, so there's at least one person logged in. I'm also thinking of all the users from Yahoo! Canada and Yahoo! India and all over the globe. It'd make sense to say millions, right? I don't know...

5. I think the points add a sort of competition feeling to this game--because it sort of is like a game--and that's what keeps everyone here. If there weren't any points to gain or lose, everyone would be somewhere else. I'd be one of those people. I'd see no point--pun not intended--in answering questions. Most would just ask, ask, ask, and who would actually help those askers who were asking serious questions?

I don't really ask questions on yahoo. Generally, if i have something to ask, it can be answered through google. I do think that people who ask interesting questions should be rewarded in points for the number of stars they receive. Thought provoking questions is what keeps yahoo answers going round after all.

1. How did I get as far as I did on Y!A regarding points.

Answering questions and getting best answers definitely. My % BA is over 50%. That means I get at least 10 points for every second question I answer. It brings the points up very quickly.

2. If I got suspended would I be able to bounce back quickly?

Not really. I'm not that prolific an answerer and the answers I do give are generally long and take a while to type out. It's taken me about 8 months to get this many points. I also have a fair few fans on this account. It would take a while to pick those up again too. It probably would take me a good few months, but i have generic copy paste answers for common questions.

3. How do I feel when people answer your question with "2 points".

It's stupid. It doesn't really bother me much, it's the same as not answering at all really. If they just want to accumulate as many points as possible then they need to get a life. It's not like the points actually really have any meaning at all.

4. How many people do you think log onto Y!A on a daily basis?

I'm not sure what you mean by this. How many people log into yahoo on any given day? Or how many people log into yahoo every single day? I'm taking it as every single day, as in, people who are so obsessed with yahoo they log in every day. No idea what so ever. My yahoo answers experience is very limited. I stick to books and authors and that's about it. I'd say there'd probably be about 200 people, maybe a bit less, who log onto Y!A daily in B&A alone. I know polls and surveys and other areas are constantly going off so I know they'd have a fair few more than that. So probably tens of thousands, although really, I don't know.

5. Do you think yahoo should have inclued the points as an added incentive to get people to use this website?

I guess... my point level doesn't bother me. What's the difference between level 6 and 7 really? I'd be using B&A regardless of whether there was points or not.

When you choose a best answer, you get 3 points back.... so in reality its only about 800 points rather than 2,000. I think the knowledge I earn is worth a lot more than two measly points.

1. Just not worrying about the points. I come here to contribute, share, and learn, and to enjoy myself while doing those three. The points just slowly accumulated along the way. At the peak, I was doing my max voting per day.... every day. 700 points a week just through voting. I've since slowed down, but a couple hundred points from voting on top of answering adds up.

2. I have not been suspended. If I did, I have a level 4 and a level 3 backup account (yeah, I know you're not supposed to). I could use them.... if I can remember the password lol

3. Doesn't bother me. There are always bad people, but the good outweighs the bad.

5. I think its a way to get them to CONTINUE to contribute. Unfortunately, the points do lead to some greedy-ness, point gamers with multiple accounts. But in general, I think its a good way to get people to continue to contribute

Actually, it's not slowing me down at all.

It probably hasn't slowed you down much either. I just checked your profile and you seem to choose most of the best answers instead of letting them going into voting. When you choose a best answer you get 3 points back, so really you're only losing 2 points for each question you ask (which you can easily regain by answering another question).

I always go for best answer. I've come across people who have been on here ages longer than I have and answered double the amount of questions, yet are still a level beneath me. 10 points is a *lot*.

I've yet to be suspended.

I sort laugh at them and think to myself "ha, well they can keep getting those 2 points because at this rate they'll never get best answers of become a top contributor".

Yep, it certainly works with me. Without points i'd probably only be here half as often as I am.

Well, being such an incredible tightwad, I don't ask questions UNLESS I am so bothered by it that I need a reply or I haven't found the answer on my own.

My miniscule three questions were because I struck out on my own. I actually have three additional questions in me that I could ask, BUT one has no answer, one has already been asked (so I can save my juice, Bruce) and the third one needs more work than I imagined.

Now, I do not want to turn this site into Pop Quiz Hell ("What is the capital of Nevada?" "Who was the fifth person to head the UN?" "Why is a raven like a writing desk?") as it annoys you and reflects badly on me, but I sometimes feel that I should ask something, as it is expected befitting my status here.

To reply to your main questions:

1) I got the bulk of my points with BAs, but I did get a good share from voting AND having people give me thumbs up for my Best Answers

2) I was able to successfully overturn my suspension, but I lost 10 days in the process (which, at the time, represented a loss of between 6000 to 11,000 points). And did you know that when you are in suspension, you can still earn points from BAs? You just cannot give answers.

3) Give a quality answer. "IDK" or "Tnx 4 da 2" are not legit answers and if you get hosed down for it, well, that's your tough toenails.

4) Even if we assume a 10% show-up factor from all members, we are STILL looking at 10 MILLION folks, at least (Last I heard, there were 100,000,000 accounts worldwide, so there could be even more now.)

5) There needs to be some degree of incentive to hang around here. I think the points aspect is misplaced, however, as weaknesses in the system can be exploited. The original intent was to kind of undercut Google Answers, by offering for free something they were charging for. However, you do get what you pay for. (See answer three, OK?).

Allow me to answer your burning questions:

1. I am never into points. So I wouldn't say my questions are suffering my points. I mean, I asked 311 questions and expecting to ask more.

2. I am where I am today as a result of helping new participants get familiar with the site. I have accumulated 14.415 points in 2 years... That's to show you I don't earn that much points, and I have no intention to. If I feel I can help a fellow user, I will. That's just me. I gained most of my points from BAs ( best answers).

3. I got my first account suspended because the Community and the Staff misunderstood my case. However, the Staff and I came to an agreement to let me start fresh with a new account. From then, the Staff and I ever since have a great Yahoo! Answers relationship.

4. Members who answer my questions with "Thanks for the two points" and "I don't know" always get reported by me. How I feel? Well, I don't feel any way about it. I just do my thing, which is to report them :-)

5. Since Yahoo! Answers does not have a checker to check into how many people log in daily, my guess would be " a lot"

6. Yes, Yahoo! Answers starts you off with 100 points, which I feel is enough. Points help encourage participation.

1) I think it is a combination of picking best answers, answering questions, and getting best answers.

2)Yes I was suspended 2x but nope I never bounced back. My first account I was on level 5. Now this is my 3rd account and I am holding at level 4... Both of my accounts though I started on level 2 beacuse I got it up before my account got suspended...

3)Annoying, and when they get best answer that annoys the crap out of me. Why should I spend my time giving you an answer then??

I do not like to ask many questions.Mainly because I research a topic thoroughly before even thinking about asking a question.I like to ask questions in which people can express an opinion.Not a yes or no question.Those are not really fun.
