They serve as counterbalance to increase our efficiency for running bipedally.
They also serve as a reservoir of fat to help maintain pregnancy, in women.

gluteus maximus, largest muscles in the body. if we didnt have then, we wouldnt be able to stand up straight and jold ourselves up

if you don't have one...you'd be pretty much dead...
'coz then the dirt would stay inside your body and turn into poison...
or...it would come out of your mouth...
