comet/feeder goldfish in horse water trough?

Is it safe to put a few of those cheap goldfish in a horses water trough to help keep it clean? Its in the shade but I have to clean the trough out 2x a week because there is algae and they drop hay in it...I usually take the hay out when i notice it but its harder to get the algae out. its a 75 gallon and gets filled 2-3x a week so I dont think I will need to worry about fish waste building up or anything and we have friends who have done this without any problems. I thought maybe monitor the fish for a week before adding them to the water to make sure they are healthy as well.

    You can use goldfish, guppies , and algae eaters and catfish to keep the algae out, but a simpler way is to purchase a product called krystal trough. I sell it in my store and here is what the box says ;

    "Krystal Trough

    All natural purifier for horse troughs

    safe for all animals , reduces algae, reduces organic contamination, removes odors, reduces ammonia & nitrates , increases clarity.

    Cleaner water, healthier horses

    Clean water encouragess horses to drink and well-hydrated horses are less likely to colic. Krystal Trough Water Purifier helps keep water troughs sparkling clean. Made with safe, all natural microbes and enzymes that workcontinuouslyy to break down substances that cloud and contaminate water. Unlike other products, Krystal trough contains no bleach or copper. For more information visit Krystaltrough.com"

    The package then goes on to state the directions and says

    that the trough needs to be thoroughly cleaned before use.

    When I was still living at home, I bought the feeder gold fish for the water troughs. I'd put in about five into the smaller bucket and about 10 in the larger trough. They kept the bucket and trough clean. The algae eaters don't do so well outside as we tried a couple of them one spring. They died in I think about a week.

    I have had goldfish in my tank every summer. I do take them out in the fall so they don't freeze or touch the tank heater. The horses do not drink them ever. The fish can see and swim off the second a muzzle nears the water. No chance the horse will swallow them!

    To anyone who thinks the horses will drink them....go find a fish aquarium and stick you hand in. Watch what the fish do...they move away fast!

    yes it is safe, but make sure the fish are big enough that they wont get accidently swallowed, and in the winter, you will have to take them out, or they will freeze, also make sure the trough is always in the shade, i know you said it is right now, or they will roast in the warm water. hope i helped! OH, an make sure the trough never goes dry and that the horses arent afraid to drink out of it

    I put those algae eater sucker fish in my water troughs and it seems to help and my horse's are fine. They have been like this for years. It helps a lot. If you don't want to do that, my neighbor puts a very small amount of bleach in the water and it helps keep the algae out and it has no negative affect. But don't put too much in the water it could be unhealthy.

    Yes it is. you can also use Guppies but need to replenish them every spring. In areas where there is a small chance of escape in a heavy rain I prefer them as they are more environmentally safe in temperate climates.

    There are no diseases that I know of (I am a biologist) that can transfer from the fish to the horse. So you are safe.

    Goldfish do indeed eat algae and what is more important they will eat mosquito larvae which spread diseases such as west nile.

    I keep 3 or 4 big goldfish in my 50 gallon tank all the time, put them in when they were 1/2" long now they are about 6" long.

    You shouldn't put those in. They really don't clean the tank and they'll leave fish dropping everywhere and make the water dirtier. Besides, the horse might accidentally swallow them and get a stomach ache. The fish droppings is the worst unless you want your horse to drink that. Hope this helps.
