Do you think this a good thing?

My eight year is real aggressive and I decided to let him express this through football. I figure if he get knocked down a few times maybe he'll learn to adjust his attitude. The only time I've seen will to act right was when my friend nephew chased him all round to play with him. The little boy plays rough just like my son and he didn't like it.

Yes, you need to give him something to channel his agression on.

Martial arts or boxing is a good thing too because it also teaches them self discipline.

My suggestion is to have a brief talk with his coach. Let him observe your boy on the field for a few times, then check-back with the coach to see what he says.

I think it is good to give your son a sport to help with aggression

This could work but talk to the couch.
