How do you feel about taxing Obesity?

Apparently there is research in the House to back up proposing a bill that would tax obese people separately. The figures read that they could raise 255 billion in 10 yrs.

Lately I've noticed more and more interviews, talk about etc on obesity and what it is costing the government.

Apparently they could go after obese people in several different ways such as your dr would report what percentage over the normal body fat you carried and then you would be taxed appropriately.

If you google Tax Obesity you will get tons of results from many many different sources.

I personally feel that is a personal freedom and do not want it taxed or impinged, however, though this is exactly how the taxes on cigarettes got started - for all their talk of 'saving' money I haven't ever heard that it saved any.. at least the health care costs did not go down as predicted.

I'm sorry, but I have to say it. " I told you so." The fact is that obesity is by far the largest strain on the health system, and since no one bothered to protect a person's right to smoke or drink from being taxed, there is no precedent in place to protect those fatties either. There is also nothing in place to protect those Type A personality heart attacks waiting to happen. Or any one else who is a health risk.

Be prepared to be discriminated against by your employer or health insurance carrier for not going to mandatory exercise sessions and taking mandatory meditation sessions to relieve stress. Be prepared to be discriminated against for not being married, or not having a pet. You're a health risk. There was no line drawn to protect anyone.

God has answered my prayers! Obesity tax? I'm for it!

Lower tax on my "personal choice" of smoking, up the tax of fast food!

    Amen.

(I love this path of logic!)

Though honestly, everything costs the government. My paycheck, health care, police and military paychecks (not including the training and equipment they recieve) and the list goes on.

At the very least, stop taxing my cigarettes, especially at the PX. Thats only thing taxed there

Let's see, next they'll be taxing skinny people because they will be perceived as not consumers of smoke, drink, and junk food.

Next will the vegans and other health-conscious people because, since they rarely have to see doctors or have other medical procedures done, they aren't contributing enough to pool in the system.

    Next will be ....

I mean where does it stop? And what happens when everyone wises up and half the money the Government relied on ( wasted ) dries up?

From an economic standpoint, it's a great incentive for my fatass to lose to weight.

Still, that would be damn near impossible to tax, like prostitution or plants (weed).

Plus the Body Mass Index was created in 1840 by some Belgian guy who clearly didn't know what he was talking about.

If you have a high rate of metabolism and not fat , does that mean even skinny people will have to pay the high tax? Maybe the checkouts will install scales for the customer to see if they qualify for being overweight. This is to the point of being ridiculous! I eat junk food and burn it off at the gym....geesh....or walk.

How much do fat people pay in already?

If so many are fat that means they pay billions in taxes already.

I thought liberals wanted government out of our personal lives and choices and that it was no one else's business?

    How much do abortions cost?

How much taxes are lost from all those aborted babies who will never grow up to become tax paying citizens?

Hell yes, if you're going to raise taxes on cigarettes to "help save my life" then by all means tax the fat bastards to "help save their lives" too. Maybe eventually it will get to the point where people say "these taxes are getting ridiculous".

I don't like them taxing obesity because their not taxing obese people. There taxing products such as fast food, soft drinks, and cookies. I refuse to pay 8 dollars for a sandwich at Mcdonalds. NO NO NO.

I refuse to pay 3 dollars for a litter of soda.

It's stupid. The government will tax anything the people will allow them to. I think we should tax any politician who's dumb. Just think of the trillions of dollars we'd have to bail out corrupt, mismanaged businesses.

    i agree Dingo.

i know some health insurance companies that pay to have your stomach hacked apart, but won't pay for a personal trainer.

things like that show just how broken the system is.
