Are the parties backwards?

It seems to me that the Republican party should be the Liberal party and the Dem Party should be the conservative one, no? If the Rep party is rooted in bible values it would seem that that would have to include being caretakers for the environment and animal species as well as taking care of the downtrodden (finding it their responsibility to do so). The Dems are supposed to be a Godless party. That being so they should all be in it for themselves, being capitalists or Libertarians.

Did I miss something?

Update:

Mike, my web search revealed one book sited by countless websites. That is why it is all over the net. Would be nice to find a second study supporting, as well as a study done by someone who has not written several books bashing Liberals.

I think that's a valid point. You are right there are some discrepencies in how the parties are formed. I think what's interesting is that the Republican party used to be the liberal party (hence the red colors, which is primarily used by liberals) and the Democrats the conservatives (blue represents calmness, or conservatism). Somewhere during the 20th century things flipped.

Actually the Democrats were libertarian, meaning true-liberal, until the socialist academics and union leaders took control early in the twentieth century. Ironically near that time progressives had influenced the Republican party, even before the socialists took control of the Democrats.

It's been a fact for years now that conservatives give a substantial amount more to charity and social programs. This can be found on every study or poll on the web so please don't try to argue this fact.

Liberals just want government to do the "charity" and environmental protection programs while conservatives and republicans believe it is the responsibility of the people and privat institutions to do it.
