Why do Protestants not realize that it is not faith alone, but a combination of faith, works, and grace?

Many Protestants are eager to cite Ephesians 2:8-9 in support of "faith alone," but always without verse 10. Together, it reads:

8

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God;

9

it is not from works, so no one may boast.

10

For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.

So why do Protestants ignore 2:10?

    I sometimes wonder of Protestants and Catholics aren't talking past one another on this issue. The real difference, as I see it, lies in their understanding of salvation. To Protestants salvation is an event, to Catholics a process. The irony is that both are true. So a Protestant who believes the Salvation event cannot be augmented by works is correct, but the process of salvation does require learning obedience (works) so from a Catholic perspective works are necessary. Then there are wierdos like me who are Protestant with a Catholic understanding of salvation. We don't really fit in anywhere.

    Its just that some see salvation as a one time thing and some see it as an ongoing process.

    Salvation is by Grace through faith alone. That starts the ball rolling. But God changes us when He saves us. And He changes us to bear fruit to glorify Him.

    Look at it his way -- if God had not made a plan of salvation for us then there is nothing that we could ever do to earn His grace. He didn't have to do this. It was purely in grace that he did.

    We show our gratitude by doing good works to His glory. In short, since Jesus died for us we live for Him.

    I don't ignore verse 10. I don't know any other Protestants who ignore it, either. Works are extremely important, but God's grace is the only means of justification and sanctification.

    We are saved by faith and Baptism and the Grace of God

    and if we are saved we will do the work,s because we will be about

    our Father,s business.

    works are proof of faith,

    works do not save,if they did then Christ would not have had to die.

    let me say it again,

    works is the evidence of faith.

    Because they haven't read ALL the New Testament;somewhere it says something like:faith alone is NOT enough ,because even the devil believes in God.

    we are not saved by works

    we are saved by grace

    but works are a result of the grace by which we are saved

    we do works because we are saved by grace

    Source(s): not sure if I'm what you'd consider a protestant but I am a saved believer in Jesus Christ

    Why do Christians not realize that there is no big angry sky daddy up there in the first place?

    They do not ignore it, they understand that we are not saved by works, we are saved for works. Faith alone, grace alone, Christ alone. Thanks for asking.
