Gouda is not an English word. It is the name of a name of a city (where the cheese is from) in the Netherlands and is actually pronounced "guh-oo-da". But Americans tend to shorten and simplify everything they say and so it became "goo-da".

The English language is also a compilation of many other languages, therefore many words that are spelled similarly (foot, food) are pronounced very differently.

Although it is being pronounced incorrectly, it is not pronounced "gowda".

For the same reason that foods like Bruschetta and Gyro are mispronounced, they weren't English terms to begin with.

    .

    Because they're not food snobs.
