A question for police officers, maybe lawyers too.?

Whats the truth about you guys needing to meet "quotas" as far as giving tickets and doing drivers license and insurance checks? There's these 2 guys here that drive me nuts every time law enforcement comes up in conversation, they just bash them and say all this negative s h i t. I feel like they truly don't know what they're talking about because when i ask them where they get their info, they have nothing to say, but continue to say how s h i t t y cops are for asking to see valid paperwork. Today the topic is specifically about "quotas" and "tough-guy" cops.

My attitude is that there should be quotas, how often are you on the road and you see some jackass driving like an idiot, i see that every day, many MANY times a day, and wonder how this person managed to get a license, or insurance. I don't need some idiot crashing into my car with no insurance!!! My s h i t's legit, i work, i pay for insurance, my license is valid, and i don't mind showing it to a cop. As far as the tough-guy thing goes, my attitude is that everyone is different, some are nice, some are not. I just hope i get one of the nice ones!

Update:

Wow, thanks for the great answers, i'm going to leave this open for a bit since there are quite a few good answers and i'd love to get as much information as possible. Additionally, I'd just like to say thanks to anyone involved in law enforcement, i've never had to call for help so i haven't really had the chance to say thanks, but Thanks!!! I really do appreciate what you've done to keep me and my family safe!

Well your frends seem a little misguided. Quotas are (as another answer stated) not constituional, and all in all a bad idea simply because with a number to meent, every person going 4-5 over is getting a ticket, and whn the quota is full every person going 18-25 over isnt getting a ticket, it compromises the integrity of the job. My department uses a statistics system, as in we are evaluated on citations written, type of citation written and hours worked. My department is also a small private municipality for a university so we are expected to write "on average" 5 parking tickets per day, 3-5 traffic tickets a day and 1-2 other citations per week IF an officerr works 40+ hours a week, but it is all based on averages, it doest mean that an officer writing only 2 tickets a day in each category is in serious trouble or getting payed less, at worst they will be approached by the sgt i a friendly manner to ask whats been up lately, sometimes we patrol areas that dont have much traffic or parking has been fine recently. We are even encouraged to give mre warnings than tickets (since it is a campus) which we all do usually (unless there is a complaint). As far as legit papers go, your friends have a very distorted view of traffic rules and regulations. What is wrong with making sure you are a certified driver and what is wrongwith making sure you have insurance, you are required to have both to drive, its a small task the Country asks in returnfor the use of its thousands of miles of public highways. You are very right to have legit papers, your friends just seem lost in a dellusional mind set based on the idea "im breaking the law but who cares its my buisness why cant cops just leave me alone while i ruin somebodies ife by hitting them without insurance?" And as r as tough guy cops, ill tell you this, im a pretty straightforward guy with traffic stops, if you ran the stop sign, its very possible your getting a ticket, but it doesnt mean i wont talk to you about whats going on, an why you ran it. No need to be tough, just firm so that whether they get a ticket or not they know that traffic laws are to be taken seriously, I even try not to argue when im being disputed with. They are some cops in my department nicer than I am as in they wll talk all day with you if they had a choice and will give a ticket to warning ratio of 1/100, others wil not ask you any questions and will just write the ticket and get you out of there. But as far as troopers and city cops you have to give them a break, they normally deal with a lot of beligerant people so sometimes they feal as if a tough guy persona will intimidate people and keep them in check, and alot of times it works. How many times do you see a cop car and start watching it closely wen your driving? You do this because the car is ment to intimidate you into obeying the law. I plan on applying to the Troopers here in LA, I just plan on doing my job, as i know every "tough guy" cop does. But as people you are right, some of us are nice others are not, just like everybody else at every other job that exists. Hopefully all of these posts will help you enlighten your friends

Quotas are not used but officers are encouraged to do the work they are paid to do. Traffic enforcement has proved to prevent accidents and reduce crime. The people that come on here and "bash" law enforcement are usually the ones that violate the law everyday and feel like they are being picked on. I too pay my insurance and have valid license and feel that everybody else should too. Laws were put into effect to protect everybody and if they are not obeyed then people should pay the consequences. True, some officers do have a terrible attitude, but not all do and people should not let a few bad ones change the way they view all officers.

Quotas are illegal and unconstitutional. Even police unions oppose them.

There are some departments that have "performance standards", where they compare your productivity to the average of the department. These standards are different from a quota because there is no set number, they just expect you to have similar statistics than the average officer. The other difference is the department can not take disciplinary action if you fail to meet these standards.

I also agree with your last paragraph... there are enough bad drivers out there where an officer does not need a quota.

Having a quota would violate civilian's civil rights. Supervisors may look at an officer's work production over a certain amount time to see if he/she is doing their job. Trust me, there are enough law breakers out there. Quotas are not necessary.

of path you heard a attorney say that i dont like majority of police officers however even i do know legal professionals like to f_ck with the police a few even deliver their customers those smalls playing cards with rights on them for his or her purchaser to deliver the officer that draws them over which all it does is deliver the driving force and police a tougher time. legal professionals love giving even the well police officers sh_t police officers could not careless approximately legal professionals.
