Joining the Coast Guard?

What are the benefits of joining the Coast Guard as an officer? If you have been in the COast Guard, what did you like and what did you dislike?

    PRO:

    -As an officer, you get more money.

    -You are automatically higher ranking than upwards of 30,000 people in the entire service.

    CON:

    -You have to fight for promotions - and even if you do EVERYTHING correctly, you may still get passed over for LCDR or CDR... or CAPT or Admiral - through no fault of your own.

    -Even though you outrank all the enlisted folks, you still have very little practical experience in doing what we do on a daily basis... which can lead you to make some silly decisions and may leave you paranoid about making bad decisions (in light of the first CON).

    This being said, I have had some dear friends become officers - and they've loved it.
