Cracking down on teens? Opinions from moms please?
With texting and the internet so popular now, more and more teen girls are taking lewd pics of themselves and posting them online without regard for their own safety or the law. Anyone they sent those pics to is automatically guilty of looking at child porn in the eyes of the law because that photo subject is under 18. People forgot that the term child is applied when teens are involved.
I recently read a news story where the teen girls who took the pics of themselves where charged with making and distributing child pornography (even if it was of themselves). The judge was fairly harsh on them because he wanted them to understand the severity of what they had done.
In a case such as this, I want to know how many parents, and other teen girls, feel this was right? Who thinks these girls should be charged under the same law as the worst of the sex offenders and who thinks these matters should be left up to the parents?
Connor: I only used girls as an example because that is what happened in the case I referred to. I know boys are just as bad, if not worse. You raised a very good point. One really has to wonder at what point should a line be drawn with Facebook, MySapce, photo texting etc...

I think it's wonderful.
If these trampy little girls don't have the good sense to not distribute nude photos of themselves...then they ought to learn the hard way.
I think that in cases such as these, if the parents had been doing their jobs in the first place, it wouldn't have gotten to the point where the child is distributing lewd photos of themselves. Clearly there's some guidance/supervision/communication lacking in that relationship.
Kudos to the judge for laying down the law and giving the kids and the parents a wake up call.
You know we sit here wondering why children are having children and why society is going to hell in a hand basket....well hello...here's a fine example.
Technology is fine and good, and yes the world changes...but that doesn't mean that it's ok for our minor children to be shameless wholly immodest miscreants....
If we don't have the sense to teach our kids right from wrong and be involved in our kids lives...we can't sit back and wonder why these kids are doing this crap in the first place.
Everyone is up in arms about the consequence...sheesh...if we were HALF as concerned about the cause of the offending behavior ...the consequence...wouldn't matter.
Remember the old saying....
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."
It may be old....but it's still true.

I'm sorry but teen BOYS are doing more of this than girls. They are both guilty of it so please don't single out females it's not right. It's also incredibly sexist.
They are guilty of making child porn so the kid sending it can go to Juve. for it. If they send it to a kid under 18 they both will get in trouble same as someone over 18.
I feel it's 100% right. You have to remember when you turn 18 your slate is whiped clean so to speak all fellonies and misdomeners are lifted and gone away (sometimes this doesn't happen but it's with multiple offense kids). So yeah I'm all for it. They should know the seriousness of this.
To be honest off the Men's Health section of this site I get asked to take pictures and send them to minors at least 5 times a month by some boys for "comparing". Honestly this is a HUGE problem I see it on the internet everyday! I see it with 13 year old kids. It is a much bigger problem then people realise because most parents aren't on facebook or myspace and talking to young kids so they don't know about how huge this problem is. So yes I do agree something needs to be done about it.
I think that schools need to do more to inform kids and so do parents! makes sure you know what your kids are doing on the computer! and tell them this is illegal because most kids don't know because they don't think it's a big deal but it is, I think there needs to be more teaching on this subject by schools and parents and I defintaly agree with the punnishments.

The letter of the law is clear. If you create an image of a child in a sexual act and send it to someone else, it is creating and distributing child porn. A child in most states is any individual under the age of 18 who is not legally emancipated.
I don't necessarily believe it's appropriate to require the girls to register as sex offenders, as that's a lifetime stigma in our state. But some court ordered counseling and some time on probation wouldn't hurt.
The main issue I have is that if these girls are sending these photos unsolicited they are placing the individuals that they're sending it to in a position where they could be prosecuted just for opening a text message. If the pictures were specifically requested, then I think both parties should have consequences.
There's no reason minors should be creating and sending sexually graphic images of themselves.

I think that maybe charging them with child pornography is a little stiff, but however it is a good deterent for teen girls.. I am a teacher at the high school level and it is so sad to see a girl with a bright future do something like this. One of my students last year took a picture of herself and sent it to someone and before long the whole school had and she is labled. I hope that I teach my children (who are all girls) better than that.. peer pressure is a horrible thing, and mistakes are made, but I don't think teens fully understand the conseqeunces when they make the mistake

I think new times call for new laws. They should make a separate law for these kids. They should still get in trouble, but I think distributing child pornography is to much. I don't think it should be solely left to the parents because there are so many parents out there who don't care or just can't control their teens.

I love that! Charging them with distribution of child porn! Great idea! haha! If I knew girls were sending that kind of stuff to my son, I'd press charges. I mean, seriously - if your son sends pictures of his penis to unsuspecting girls, wouldn't he be labeled a pervert? Of course he would. The parents should handle this kind of thing, sure, but if they cannot handle it, then the law should step in.

I thinks its absolutely wrong for the girls to do this. Judges have to do what they think will help. Thats why they are the judges not us. Im a soon to be mother and I would be so scared for my daughter if she did this.

Who cares, I don't think this should be a matter of the state, more along parents decision, request a LEGAL house arrest maybe? or something along those lines.

I think the judge was right. Its sad how young girls are now turning into sl*ts. They think its cool. Someone needs to teach them that being a sl*t isnt cool, its wrong and dangerous.
