Animal Lovers- Would you ever love going hunting?

There is this one lady at work who has several cats and claims to be a great cat lover. She has pictures of them all over her desk. But she also has several pictures of her by dead deer that she hunted and murdered, with her holding them by the head or antlers and smiling. She raves on and on about how she loves hunting and the taste of deer meat and rabbit meat is so good, and she's tried (and killed) just about every meat there is (including cat). So how on earth can she "love" cats so much, but also love to murder innocent animals? She once raved about killing a baby deer and eating it, as well.

To this day I will not talk to her because I'm disgusted by it.

Have you ever met anyone who has pets of their own that they "love," yet they go out and murder innocent animals and enjoy every minute of it? And worst of all, have you met anyone who enjoyed eating the very same species of meat their own "beloved" pet is???

Update:

Obviously I would never do that. I am the proud mother of two beautiful Dutch rabbits and love them with everything I've got. And although I'm not vegan, I do hate the idea of eating meat. I feel TERRIBLE everytime I eat something meat. I even have stayed away from seafood my entire life because everytime I imagine eating seafood I picture eating my childhood pet fish "Mac." I just started (1 year ago) occassionally eating popcorn shrimp, but even then I feel like I'm eating my pet :( And I don't eat it much. MAYBE once a month, about 5 pieces.

Update 2:

Hmmm... Looks like no one knows how to READ in this question.

The question is not about eating meat. I know animals need to die to get the meat so humans can eat it. And it's not about overpopulation.

This is about a woman who calls herself a cat lover but loves to eat cat meat. She thinks of herself as an advocate for animals and that she is against abuse towards animals, but when she hunts she brags about shooting them in a place that won't kill them, but lets them die slower so that she can take a picture with her "hunt".

Update 3:

BTW- Humans have an "overpopulation" problem. Therefore, with some logic from people on here, I don't see this lady having a problem with murdering people and eating them. Since it's the same concept.

But again, I'm not against eating meat although I do feel guilty with every bite. Though it seems that many who answered this are open to killing their children for food, as they've said...

It's entirely possible, in fact many of us do love animals. Most of us have pets of some sort, and some of us even make a living with animals. For example I'm a dairy farmer, and spend most of the day caring for the cows, but still enjoy hunting. Many people have dogs that are their best friend and hunting buddy. The list can go on and on. While it may sound strange, hunters are probably the people who care about wildlife the most. Many of us go out of our way to help the species we enjoy hunting, which not only can help with success, but keep the populations healthy so we can continue to enjoy hunting them. This can include planting food plots and restoring or creating habitat, Also most of the fees for hunting licenses go towards habitat conservation, as well as a small tax placed on most hunting equipment is dedicated for this purpose. Provided you're physically able to do so, you're never too old to start hunting, not everyone started everything they enjoy doing when they were a kid. As for finding someone to go with, perhaps you have a friend, neighbor relative who hunts, or else know of someone from work, church, other activities that does. Another good place to look is try to make some friends at a local shooting range. Most hunters are happy to help introduce new people to the sport. Another thing to think about is if you eat meat or use leather an animal died. The difference here is harvesting the animal yourself or having someone else do it. I do realize there are people who don't like the idea of harvesting the animal themselves for various reasons, but there is a huge difference between hunting an animal (or working in a slaughterhouse for that matter) and not caring about animals.

  • You can't murder a deer. Maybe you should look up the definition of murder. Idiots killed wolves....idiots killed cougar. Now there's nothing to keep the deer population in check so humans HAVE to hunt them otherwise they'd be all over the place riddled with disease (as happens in any overcrowding situation). Secondly deer are a legitimate prey animal and are eaten. The only time I'm against hunting is when somebody shoots something they're not going to eat. You're not going to eat a Tiger, or a Polar Bear, or any of these things some people like to turn into trophies. If you kill something kill it to protect yourself or for food, that's the way I see it.

    LOL, murdering deer...

I love animals. Always have, always will.

I have no problem with REAL hunting. I do not feel it is completely wrong for us to eat other beings. What I do think is wrong is the cruel in inhumane treatment of the majority of livestock animals in the US, particularly in CAFO's.

What I mean by "real" hunting is actual going out in the woods and hunting... I am not cool with game farms. I think people who "hunt" at game farms are seriously kidding themselves.

If I go out in the woods and kill a deer, bring it home and use all of the meat to feed myself (and my dogs) that deer lived it entire life up until harvest as a free wild animal. I find that to be the most humane way to eat meat there is.

I think it's very important to remember that hunters are some of the best wildlife advocates we have. (Particularly in places like Wisconsin where hunting and wildlife are a huge source of revenue)

I don't think I could ever hunt big game like deer or moose. However, I am pretty sure I would love bird hunting. I have two golden retrievers, who were bred to retrieve fallen birds, and I would really love to actually be able to do that with them. I don't know why I feel differently about birds or other small game than I do about large prey.

I'm an omnivore and I really don't feel bad about eating meat. I wouldn't eat veal or other baby animals, but it doesn't bother me to have a steak or anything like that.

Anyway, I'm definitely an animal lover, but I would love to go bird hunting.

ADD: After reading other answers, I just had to add that I would NEVER go hunting just for sport. I definitely believe in eating what you hunt. I also would not go hunting bear, big cats, or anything like that. I have been fishing and it's actually quite fun.

I use to feel the same way. I was even a vegetarian for years until I met my BF and then began eating meat again.

You should not feel bad for the animals being hunted, but the ones that you get the meat from at the market or at fast food restaurants. Those animals live horrible lives and are not humanly killed. Also getting your own animals is a lot more healthy thant the ones at the stores because of all the junk they give the live stock.

The truth is we as humans are omnivores. We are suppose to eat both meat and veggies. I love animals, I love cows and chickens but I am not going to stop eating them because its the way of life. Animals eat animals.

If you don't want to eat meat that's your decision, but its a natural Instinct for humans and other animals to eat one another. Its called the food chain. Its not that I like seeing animals die, but its the way the world works.

That does not make her a bad person. There are tons of hunters who love their dogs and other pets. You don't have to love one or the other. For example, I love to fish (I won't hunt) but I still love my goats and other animals at home. I don't think that I would ever eat the same species, like I would never eat a cat, dog, or goat because I love them so much. However, I am not a vegetarian, so if I enjoy the sport of fishing, I'm okay with eating fish. Fishing is not really a bad thing-- it's mentioned in the Bible. I agree that hunting is completely different. I personally would never shoot a bullet or arrow into an animal. BUT that is no reason not to talk to a person. I know tons of people who love their pets but just enjoy the sport, my whole family hunts! She can love her cats, but love hunting and the taste of deer meat at the same time. If she is killing deer just for fun and not actually for the food, that makes her a bad person. Unless they have a reason for killing, like they are actually going to eat the deer in its entirety, then they are doing a bad thing. But because you said she loves the taste of deer meat, I think she has a reason for killing them because she is actually eating the meat. However, I do find that strange how she has eaten cat and loves it, but still keeps cats in her home.

No although i've been hunting before but i never actually shot and killed anything. I now regret ever going hunting in the first place. We do have to have protein though so i guess i would go hunting for food and food only not just to kill. I'll admit though i never really enjoy eating meat. I've known ppl in the past that go hunting just for sport and i've seen it on sports channels to. Frankly it really disgusts me. If that lady was a true animal lover she would want to take care of them instead of killing them. Though i don't have children, if i did i would never kill them for meat thats beyond sickening and cannibalism

I love animals. I understand where your coming from I would never kill a animal I would feel guilty and horrible. For me eating chicken and beef doesn't make me feel like i killed the animal. If i ever saw it happen i would probably be a vegetarian but i don't think you should feel bad many people eat meat and its good for your body and health to eat meat lots of protein.

Dont feel bad and if it bothers you that much...maybe you should try being a vegan. Good luck!

I would hunt - but I have physical limitations that preclude it. I could get a disabled hunter provisionary license - but I don't think it's fair to hunt that way. So - I solicit unwanted hunted scrap meat instead for my dogs... and sometimes I'll pay for the license of someone who wants to hunt - if they'll share the bounty.

Favorite meal ever - venison tenderloin medallions (with wild mushrooms and wild rice) from a young buck that fed in an apple orchard next to a corn field.

If the world went back to the dark ages you better believe that many Americans (including me) would put dog and cat back on the menu.

If I lived in the country - I'd have rabbits and chickens to feed my dogs. (as it is I have to buy them now).

Sure, I love to eat deer, rabbit, cow, chicken, turkey, duck, goose, pig, fish, and shellfish. And I have 2 dogs and 2 cats and have owned many other cats, dogs, and rats in my life.

I personally don't hunt, although I would in a heartbeat if given the opportunity. I think I would also enjoy trapping. I plan to raise chickens and possibly rabbits for my family's consumption once we move and settle in to our 4.4 acres soon.

I don't believe that hunting is 'murder' and I don't believe that animals are 'innocent'. What about predators...are they 'guilty' and the prey is 'innocent'?

Here's another way to look at it: if you eat meat, would you rather eat an animal that has lived wild and free, or an animal that has been kept in captivity in a small enclosure and given antibiotics and growth hormones?

I also know quite a few folks who hunt with dogs. Coonhounds hunt coons (many practice 'tree and release'), beagles hunt bunnies, labs retrieve waterfowl. These people love their dogs and take excellent care of them. The dogs enjoy the hunt as much if not more than the humans, and get their share of the meat, too.

Hunters also are the US' top conservationists. Not only by license fees and taxes on ammo, but they voluntarily support many different conservation organizations, for example the Wild Turkey Federation or Pheasants Forever, and many others. Hunters are out in the woods or whatever their environment is, as often as they can be. In order to attempt to hunt an animal in its own environment, you must learn all about that species' habits. When you're out there in nature you see so much! So many people miss the little things, the cycle of life, when certain trees leaf out, when acorns drop, when the cottontails start to breed. How many people really see all of that? Hunters are out there and they love being outdoors and part of the natural world. We humans today are so far removed from nature that we have forgotten what it is like to rely on self for survival. It is very easy to talk of 'murder' when we live in crowded cities or suburbs and our food comes to us in boxes and in styrofoam trays.

Just something to think about. Interestingly, hunters are amazingly tolerant of other viewpoints. I've yet to meet an outdoorsman or outdoorswoman who bashes people for not eating meat. Hmmmm....

added: Ethical hunters want a humane kill. It is their goal to end the animal's life as quickly and painlessly as possible. Most people who take photos of themselves with their kill do so after it is dead. If this woman is truly causing the deer to suffer needlessly, that is indeed wrong. But it would be very unusual.
