If you can move the unit outside, it will be easier to clean out and disinfect. You can literally hose it out.

You should discard all of the contents...especially if there were any eggs, mayo, etc.

I'd start by using Lysol cleaner to clean and disinfect the entire interior of the unit. Make it easy on yourself, pull the drawers and shelving right out to give them a thorough cleaning. (Wear gloves)

That should help quite a bit...again, if you can get the unit outside, then you can even set it so that sunlight will get into the interior, and let the unit air out for a couple of days. If that isn't feasible, then lay in a supply of the baking soda boxes, and change them every day or two, for the first week, and then every couple of days, and so on.

I've had to clean up a few messes like this over the years....often sunshine and fresh air were the biggest help.

    Good Luck

DO NOT USE LYSOL OR SIMILAR PRODUCTS TO CLEAN THE INSIDE OF A REFRIGERATOR OR FREEZER.

They will leave a residue that can get into your food and make you ill. The ONLY thing you should clean a fridge with is baking soda. If it didn't work the first time, try it again, and try to let some fresh air and sunshine inside the fridge for a few hours. The charcoal idea isn't bad, either.

Clean the refrigerator good. Put a container of activated charcoal, that they use in fish tanks, and close the door. It should take the smell out in a few days. I had the same problem, tried vinegar, newspaper, nothing worked but the charcoal. Good Luck

A sponge, bucket of warm water, and Lysol ought to do the trick. It kills the germs and leaves everything smelling fresh. Works wonders.
