Either the Civic or Accord are very reliable. I currently own a '95 Civic at 186k miles and it's running strong. My most expensive repair was just replacing a CV Axle which ran about $70 with a self install.
Just be sure to take care of it, I know someone with a '97 Accord, it isn't taken care of too well so as a result it doesn't sound very healthy when it runs and lacks some power. On the bright side though, the Accord is one of the longest lasting vehicles out there. Honda once let out a commercial stating that over 70%(? I can't remember the exact %) of Accords ever made still remain on the road today.

If she gets a Honda for $5000 it will have to be very, very old. Honda's really hold their value. I have a 1999 Honda Civic and the only problem I have had with it was I needed to get a new muffler. I expect to have it for a long, long time. It is the 2nd Honda I have owned; the first was a Honda Accord which I bought new and I had it for 15 years. She should consider the Civic since it is reliable, has a smooth ride and is less expensive than the Accord.
I get Consumer's Report and both the Civic and Accord are on its list of the top seven as one of the most reliable cars. In fact, only one American car made the list.

Honda Accord is the highest rated sedan/coupe in the US for re-sale and reliability. The EX is the top-of-the-line as far as bells and whistles.Get an LX and save.An LX or DX is just as reliable and is still a Honda.Mine is a 96'coming up on 271,000.runs like new, starts every single time and never overheats. That's not to say maintenance doesn't need to happen.I've overhauled Struts and Brakes at 200,000.Hub bearings hide behind the front rotors and are often overlooked until it's too late, not to forget the inner/outer CV joints are short lived on the OEM axle half's.Do a little maintenance and you will have a car well into the 1/2 million mile mark.Good luck

It's too early to tell if the new Hondas are capable of what they were before but I am confident that they will be. After all these years, Honda has not let us down yet, so why would they now? I believe Hondas are getting better as a matter of fact. It is known that Hondas are to run above 200k+ miles without running into major problems.
I would think otherwise only if Honda was going bankrupt and had to make changes to save themselves money. But that is not the case, Honda is doing pretty well in my opinion and can only get better from this point on.

i drive a 97 accord wagon EX and its has 176,000 miles. still runs like a champ. you can never go wrong with a honda or if its a civic or accord. they are very reliable and YES the do run forever. i use to own a 86 CRX Si with 240,000 miles and it was mint! a 99 or 00 accord will be good for your GF and you shouldnt have to spend 5k on the car. with whatever is left, find out if there is anything wrong that the previous owner didnt tell you was broken, fix it.
